Dollar Tree breaks the $1 barrier as costs take a bite

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — Dollar Tree embedded in its very name what it stands for: Behind these doors, everything can be had for just $1.

The mantra to which the Chesapeake, Virginia, company has held true for decades will now be only mostly true.

After expanding nationwide from only a handful of stores in Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, Dollar Tree is breaking the mold and will sell items in some locations that exceed the tantalizing $1 grab-n-go price.

The cost of clothes, cars, food and just about everything else has soared this year as the global economy emerges from a pandemic uppercut and Dollar Tree has not been untouched.

Last month the retail chain said that rising shipping costs would take a bite of $1.50 to $1.60 out of its per-share profits this year. That’s a huge hit for any business, perhaps more so for one founded decades ago steadfastly calling itself “Only $1.00 Inc.”

“For decades, our customers have enjoyed the ‘thrill-of-the-hunt’ for value at one dollar - and we remain committed to that core proposition - but many are telling us that they also want a broader product assortment when they come to shop,” said CEO Michael Witynski in a prepared statement.

Now that’s not good reporting: Lots of things at Dollar Tree cost more than a dollar!

I think most “dollar stores” these days have items priced at more than a dollar. Fake discounted news.

Not a big deal to a person who remembers five and dime stores...

Maybe they need to change their name.

“The Inflation Adjusted Pricing Store” has a nice ring to it.

Well, CEO Witynski, why don’t you tell those who “want a broader product assortment” to go down the street to Walmart or across the street to the Dollar General?

Hope this stupid move backfires big time!

I remember when the local five and dime had to change it’s name to the dollar store.

Not at the four different ones I shop at. In fact, I’ve never seen a product at any Dollar Tree priced over one dollar!

Most dollar stores do, but NOT the Dollar Tree. I know that because I’ve shopped them all over the country for many years.

Dollar General is more a general store with food. Dollar tree is a straight up $1 Chinese junk store.
I think you are thinking about “Family Dollar” which is a direct competitor to Dollar General.

Not too long ago, the burger chain Carl’s Jr. offered what it dubbed the Six-Dollar Burger—a burger that cost about $2:50 but was supposedly the equivalent of a six-dollar burger at a fancy restaurant. Now, with the price of the Six-Dollar Burger shooting way past six dollars, it has been renamed the Thick Burger.

My juvenile humor takes a hit on this. I can no longer hold up an item and tell the clerk it’s not marked and ask how much is it?

Honestly if I were them I’d just rebrand as the Two Dollar Tree

Have a special aisle where things are still under $2

They can buy some time if they change their name to “Deuce Tree”, meaning bring your $2 bills, or telling us that items cost $2 or less.

I like it, but it probably won't sell in the Nothing to See here media.
