America’s underlying pandemic is getting worse.
New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) out Wednesday shows the number of states with high obesity rates nearly doubled in the course of two years, with at least 35 percent of residents in 16 states consisting of adults with obesity in 2020. The number of states is up from a dozen in 2019, and nine in 2018.
States added last year include Delaware, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas, each now home to a population where more than a third of people are obese. States that had already reached that benchmark by 2019 include Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
The map below from the CDC outlines the prevalence of obesity based on self-reported data of U.S. adults, with obesity defined as having a BMI of 30.0 or higher. Those with a BMI between 25.0 and 30 are considered overweight.

Jay Cutler is considered “morbidly obese” by BMI standards at 7% body fat.

Shouldn’t this be reported as a win against hunger and malnutrition?
Meanwhile the limbo stick definition of “obese” keeps lowering...just like 80 is the new 100 for fasting blood glucose.
yes its strictly a height to weight ratio.
a visual inspection of the person often tells you whether they are obese or athletic
also bmi doesn’t distinguish between overweight people that are active versus passive, and thin people that are active versus skinny unhealthy
bmi actually clouds the issue rather than gives you a precise indicator

The BMI Chart says I’m too short.
I know the morbidly obese are more prone to die with COVID....but not all do. Some get better.....
I'm sure there are other factors....COPD, CHF, etc, etc..........
Seems the Hosp I work at is slowing down with people real sick....
We shall see.....
And everybody’s getting fat except Mama Cass…

Our richest people are the most likely to be thin and our poorest the most likely to be obese. I suspect we are much closer to something like Brave New World than 1984.
