Basing obesity on BMI is problematic.

Jay Cutler is considered “morbidly obese” by BMI standards at 7% body fat.

You can estimate the error and adjust.

The BMI probably works to determine trends, right?

yes its strictly a height to weight ratio.

a visual inspection of the person often tells you whether they are obese or athletic

also bmi doesn’t distinguish between overweight people that are active versus passive, and thin people that are active versus skinny unhealthy

bmi actually clouds the issue rather than gives you a precise indicator
