Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday said she was ordering the immediate release of 191 inmates who are locked up on Rikers Island for what she called “technical” violations of their parole from state prison.
Hochul made the announcement before signing into law the “Less Is More Act” that will stop the state from putting ex-cons back behind bars for missing appointments with their parole officers, violating curfew or testing positive for drugs or alcohol.
The measure is set to go into effect on March 1, but Hochul said the ongoing crisis at Rikers meant there was no time to wait, calling reports of out-of-control violence and chaos at the massive jail complex “deeply disturbing.”
Hochul also said she was ordering the transfers of around 200 inmates from Rikers to state prisons amid recent admissions by city Correction Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi that planned reform efforts can’t be achieved under the existing conditions.
Hochul said the inmates she was releasing “have served their sentences” for the crimes they committed and “do not need to be incarcerated.”

That well work out for them.
It’s NYC who will know the difference if they are in Rikers or on the streets?
Rikers is cleaner and less violent.
Those are NOT “technical violations”
Paroled prisoners are required to meet with their parole officers - this is the earliest form of “social policing” to give guidance to the parolees.
Likewise - curfew is part of being paroled and still part of your punishment as is not using drugs.
This is BS.
House most of ‘em in Kathy Hochul’s neighborhood and her parent’s neighborhood and her private school old friends neighborhood. We’ll be happy to pay a little more in taxes to make that happen.
New Yorkers getting yet more of what they voted for.
Even after Cuomo is gone.
Pretty soon, the only way a person will go to prison in NY is if they shoot back at the thug trying to rob them.
New York state is well on the way to achieving true anarcho-tyranny.
We don’t know how far the election fraud goes back, so we don’t know if sufficient numbers of New Yorkers actually voted for this.
Just what we need...more criminals on the streets. Add in those who don’t have to post bail...and are free to roam the streets....and we’re talking violent people.
Kathy Hochul is from Western New York. No one knows this butm Western New York is suburb of heaven, if you don’t count the politicians. Good people. Good life. She should know better. Actually, she does know better, but souls don’t come cheap nowadays...
Meet the new boss, worse then the old boss.
Dems are just making room to incarcerate the conservatives, Trump or MAGA supporters, or anyone else who dares to disobey.
Sounds like the natives are getting restless in Rikers so this is the solution to that problem. I see no moral hazard here. Does anyone else?
Hochul has turned into quite the monster.
“I’m going to let other people pay for these criminals.”
Why would anybody pay taxes in New York?
I’m not paying the school taxes this year. Can’t afford it.
Kidos can stay home.
Ask any parole officer what is a red flag for the repeat violent animal offender and that will be a simple violation. I feel sorry for the victims who will be murdered, raped, knocked out, stomped, and robbed and they don’t know it yet.
Way to go Guv!.
Why should those poor oppressed prisoners have to find a way to meet with some parole officer, who probably doesn’t really under stand them?
What can’t these poor former prisoners of the state be allowed to enjoy a few Beers, Joints and Hits with their friends?
Again Way to Go, Guv!
