House Republicans vow to not vote for increased debt ceiling
NY Post ^ | 08/30/2021 | Callie Patteson

Over 100 Republicans in the House are vowing in a new letter that they will not vote to increase the debt ceiling — calling the issue a “problem created by Democrat spending.”

Citing trillions of dollars of government spending proposed by Democrats, the 103 House Republicans promised not to increase the debt ceiling under any circumstance, according to the letter obtained by Fox News.

“Democrats have embarked on a massive and unprecedented deficit spending spree. Without a single Republican vote, they passed a $1.9 trillion ‘Covid relief’ bill in March even though $1 trillion was still unspent from previous bipartisan Covid relief bills,” the letter said, also citing the recently passed $3.5 trillion budget resolution.

“In order for this spending to occur, our nation’s debt limit will have to be increased significantly,” it continued. “Because Democrats are responsible for the spending, they need to take responsibility for increasing the debt ceiling.”

So brave. There’s enough votes without them.

They’ll just wait until and if they are in the majority to do it. That’s all. I’m sure it’ll be really important then.

They’ll cave. They will say they they forced the Dems to come to a negotiated agreement so that they can support it.

Its all a game.

These are the Assistant Democrats that enabled the latest assault on the USA

Dan Sullivan (R-AK) Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) Mike Crapo (R-ID) Roy Blunt (R-MO) Richard Burr (R-NC) Deb Fischer (R-NE) Lindsey Graham (R-SC) Rob Portman (R-OH) Thom Tillis (R-NC) Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) Jim Risch (R-ID) Chuck Grassley (R-IA) Bill Cassidy (R-LA) Kevin Cramer (R-ND) Roger Wicker (R-MS) Mitch McConnell (R-KY) John Hoeven (R-ND) Susan Collins (R-ME) Mitt Romney (R-UT)

They knew when they were voting for the $1.2 trillion they were enabling the bigger, worse one.

Why only 103?
The rest are all Assistant Democrats.

We need a thorough House and Senate cleaning.

145 of these losers voted in Feb. for Liz Cheney to lead them.

Doesn’t matter.

They’re going to use the McConnell gambit, whereby the debt ceiling goes up automatically UNLESS the Congress DISAPPROVES, which it won’t do.

This is the old Fiscal Cliff US Constitution upending scheme that McConnell came up with so 1. the Oligarchs get their way and 2. removes the House power of the purse.

I understand their point but it’s still funny when the Republicans try to paint themselves as the party of fiscal responsibility.

All this bickering, and Congress, without a single Republican saying ‘no’ to their constituents, has been promising a raise in social security benefits and another stimulus check.

IIRC, the Bush post-9/11 Congress raised the debt ceiling, too.

“They’re going to use the McConnell gambit, whereby the debt ceiling goes up automatically UNLESS the Congress DISAPPROVES, which it won’t do.”

I disagree. It is my understanding that the new debt ceiling, set as per August 1 2021 after the 2 year Covid suspension, can only be increased by going through a bill passed by Congress and signed by POTUS.

In addition, I believe it is subject to filibuster rules.

It can be done by a single bill or attached to another bill.

You may be right. Both are mentioned in the below story. We’ll see. But they’ll likely find a way to increase the debt ceiling. They always do.

Oops. Forgot to add that the Porkulous bill that will be subject to reconciliation gives them another option, as discussed in the article. It is thought that they won’t take the political risk to do so but that is unknown.
