Meat wars: why Biden wants to break up the powerful US beef industry Both the planet and US politics have heated up in tandem over recent decades, but few sectors have stewed in controversy quite like America’s beef industry. Four super-powered meatpackers control more than 80% of the US beef market, an extraordinary concentration of market power that the Biden administration is not happy about. A recent executive action signed by the president aims to increase competition in the beef industry, with the White House noting that, over the past five years, “farmers’ share of the price of beef sales has dropped by more than a quarter – from 51.5% to 37.3% – while the price of beef has risen”. But how were the big four meatpackers able to capture so much of the US beef processing capacity? They had help. When explaining the history of consolidation in US meatpacking, it is normal to begin in the age of Upton Sinclair’s 1906 novel The Jungle. In the wake of Sinclair’s muckraking exposé on the industry of the time, Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Federal Meat Inspection Act, aimed at cleaning up the meat supply for consumer health and challenging the nearly unrestricted power of these players.

It is to give the industry to selected billionaires. That’s all it’s about.

Anyone try and get ribs for a BBQ or to smoke this summer??
They are almost twice the price per pound and they look like crap. They were fine through May then BAM! $7.50 a pound and they look like they are a year old in my area.
I can’t speak in general terms, but the processing plants in SW Missouri by my sister-in-law are a hotbed of COVID disease. They’ve had a lot of missed production.
Might just have to bring back the Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef” lady.
I have no idea how, but I get the feeling that 80% of US beef is going to be shipped to China in the future.
Oh, well. We have insects to eat.
Unfortunately, Clara Peller has been dead for about 35 years.

Ribeyes are up 3 bucks at $10.99/lb. (Other market over $20)

Between the meat market, and Dollar General, I rarely have to go to the grocery
I don’t get my beef from the big 4 anyway. I get it through American Frozen Foods and the beef is to die for. There is no steak sauce in this house.
That said the big 4 do need to get broken up. The fact that Biden is doing it and not Trump really sucks.

Biden’s an idiot. Someone else wants to break it up.
Biden doesn’t want to do shyte - the man has alzheimers, he’s a 50 year swamp-scum in DC, and he is totally corrupted and controlled by others.
He’s blank face in front while the Left and intelligence agencies divide and conquer America.
The Chinese actually have cockroach farms. They pretty much eat everything that moves or doesn’t move there.
Our oligarchs would love to see us subsisting on roaches and slugs.
Going after beef is part of the great reset.
Whenever the SJWs get involved, it goes and ends badly.
The break-up of ma Bell was a sterling example of all the help we can stand.
I’ve been in the meat business over 40 years and have been a broker/trader for 30.
Glad I am all but retired as would not want to try and make a living in the business in the current environment.

Years ago when it became increasingly difficult to find porterhouse steaks,
a meatpacker informed me all premium cuts were shipped to china.
