I can buy into the sentiment (especially for a homecoming after an overseas tour of duty), but yeah, you’re right - the chorus is an instant punch out, at least for me.
Don’t even bring up “Yellow Ribbon”.
When my brother was in Nam, the Animals and “We Gotta Get Outta This Place” was their go-to song - that one I can fully endorse.

Actually, I like most Steve Miller songs. I got to see him in concert in Philly in ā77 and that was a great concert. {creak!}
