A group of more than 20 prominent progressive groups and unions is criticizing Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) in a new ad campaign for his response to the Jan. 6 insurrection and his vote against federal voting rights legislation, NBC News reported Monday.
The $800,000 ad campaign, which started on Sunday, highlights Johnson's remarks on Fox News on the violent Jan. 6 riot, which he said was "peaceful" except for "a number of people, basically agitators that whipped the crowd and breached the Capitol."
"You're failing us, Sen. Johnson," the ad campaign, named "Country Over Party," states. "Protecting our democracy has never been partisan, and yet you refused to investigate the deadly attack on our Capital."
The ads also criticize Johnson's vote against the For the People Act, which the Senate GOP blocked in June.
"Access to the polls matters to all Americans, and yet you blocked voter protections that have the support of Democrats, Republicans, and independents," the ads continue.
"Democrats want to consolidate control over government and our lives," Johnson said in a statement emailed to NBC News. "For the People Act has nothing to do with voting rights. The Jan 6 commission proposed by Democrats would not have investigated the failure of congressional leadership to provide adequate security for the Capitol. Democrats are not healing or unifying our nation. They are pushing false narratives to further their own radical agenda."
The ad will air on local news and sports shows and cable news shows, as well as on "Fox News Sunday" and "Face the Nation" in Washington, according to Axios. A print version of the ad will also appear in 10 newspapers.
The progressive coalition includes the NAACP, the Sierra Club, the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Working Families Party and the National Education Association labor union, according to NBC News.
The ad urges voters to call Johnson's D.C. office. "It's time Sen. Johnson puts country over party," the ad said.
So much for his promise to serve only two terms.
How is this even news? Presumably these groups have never liked the guy.
You have a point. It's not like these guys or their followers were going to vote for Johnson to begin with.
Watched the NFL at the White House. Did anyone else notice that not one single NFL player was wearing a US flag pin?
Do they somehow imagine this campaign will hurt Johnson? If anything it gives him a bit of street cred that he really needs.
It was mostly peaceful.
I thought that was the standard?
Bezos just gave Van Jones 10 MILLION dollars to “give to charity”
Where do you think that money is going to end up?
Ad buys to overthrow the GOP.
Or maybe Van spends it on hookers and blow...
Tucker just said it was $100M!!??
Kim Kardashian is expensive.
Insurrection without weapons.
Tucker just said it was $100M!!??
Bezos will give the GOP a couple million and they will happily lick the dog food from his pet’s bowl.
Bezos and Zuckerberg are poisoning the country. And our elected representatives couldn’t care less.
Is this some of Suckabuck’s hundred million?
All Communists.
My bad - it was 100 million
So if we divide the estimated 400 rioters by the low estimate of 500,000 at the Trump rally, we have 8 hundredths of 1 percent participating in riotous behavior at the Capitol. The math is on Johnson’s side.
If only 0.08% of FBI and DoJ personnel were corrupt political operatives, what a happy world it would be.
