A-lister Mel Gibson called Britney Spears at her lowest point and told her God would save her, reveals her closest pal.
In 2008 the world watched on as pop princess Britney went through a devastating breakdown.
Extreme partying, reports of prescription drug abuse and violent outbursts prompted a court to hand control of her life over to her dad Jamie.
During the period of personal turmoil, a host of random names reached out to offer support, Brit's friend Sean Phillip revealed.
Speaking for the first time about Britney's most troubled years, he exclusively told The Sun: "I remember Mel Gibson was one of them, telling her that Christianity would save her and to turn back to God. It was all quite surreal.”
Britney is currently in the middle of a fierce legal battle to wrestle back control of her affairs from her father.
Fans recently listened in horror as the singer told how the arrangement was "ruining my life".
Sean, who now works in wildlife and conservation, recalled a shocking incident on New Year’s Eve 2007 in Las Vegas, when Britney’s team covered up a collapse.
It was all quite surreal.
He says that after she fainted in Pure nightclub, management tried to give her a suspected amphetamine to get her conscious and functioning again.
At the time, representatives for Britney denied the episode and claimed that she had left the club because she was “tired”.
Sean insisted: “The reality is that she was exhausted. She was being worked to the bone, and was in no fit state to still be performing.
“The medication she was on was not helping her at all. She was becoming paranoid like I’d never, ever seen her before.
“She fainted in the club at the party she was hosting.
“I had to get her out, carrying her over my shoulder with a black suit jacket thrown over her, and stopping people trying to take pictures on their phones.
“By the time we got back upstairs she was fine, but crying hysterically, and so upset. She was saying, ‘Why am I so accessible? Why am I still doing club gigs?’.
“The medication she was on was not helping her at all.
Sean Phillip “That night, management came up and were trying to give her something, in pill form, and I said, ‘No, it’s not happening’.
“She was just overwhelmed. I begged for them to let her rest.”
A few days later, Britney went on a rampage and lashed out at a photographer’s car, smacking it with an umbrella. She was descending into chaos.
Her behaviour in public became increasingly erratic, with boozy nights out with party pals including Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.
Meanwhile, her on-stage performances were heavily criticised for being stilted and robotic. Terrifyingly, in January 2008, she was pictured being carted out of her house strapped to a wheeled stretcher.
It was reported she had taken prescription amphetamines and locked herself in the bathroom with youngest son Jayden, as she refused to hand him back to ex-husband Kevin Federline.
Within days, a court deemed her unfit to look after her own affairs, and her father was given control of her estate and all aspects of her career and life.
What a poor headline.
The thrust of the thing is her chaotic problems, not Gibson and his comments.
You’re not confusing her with Miley Cyrus, are you?
Sounds like Mel made a call out of genuine caring for her well-being.
Sounds like she decided to go another way.
How’d that work out?
Sean insisted: “The reality is that she was exhausted. She was being worked to the bone, and was in no fit state to still be performing. But she needs the money... right?
..... As do others who wonder about all of us. Lucky for the Universe ...... There exists a God of compassion ....... And a TRUE Judge who knows all things ..... Unlike us mear sacks of meat .....
God loves broken people. His offer is to heal the sick, not those who consider themselves healthy. I pray that their faith is real.
It’s not our place to judge or speculate on the faith of others who profess to be Christians. There is no good reason to do so. That is between them and God. God knows his own and can’t be fooled or judge them wrongly. Rather, our focus should be on our own relationship with God; that is is alive and bearing good fruit, and that we are becoming more like him everyday.
You have no idea what actually took place, what Gibson actually said, or how the girl reacted to it.
It drives me nuts that people read stuff on the Internet about ‘celebrities’, and then think that they know all about them.
It’s anyone’s place to judge regardless of the circumstances providing it doesn’t take the form of personal harassment. However, being considerate and possibly showing empathy is preferable when possible.
One’s relationship to God (or lack of) is certainly a personal matter and no doubt unique to each of us.
“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Roman’s 3:23
Good for Mel Gibson. He has sometimes been far from perfect since that phone call to Britney Spears in 2008, but so have we all.
I believe the purpose in life for the Thief on the Cross, was to be forgiven at the very end of his sinful life, to show us that it is never to late in this life, no matter how many sins, or how awkward the prayer.
Mel and Britney have had many flaws, but there is still a God who is willing, if we are too.
Amen!
Mel Gibson is what I call double minded. He can be so charitable and selfless. He can make great movies displaying this.
I know that I have been very double minded, like Lot’s wife. Where I wanted the World’s way and rejected God’s way.
amen
I read stuff on the Internet about ‘celebrities’, and then think that they are my friends. Then, when I meet them, I’m surprised they don’t remember me.
Except Jodi Foster. I realize now that Jodi and I don’t know each other.
Mel is a Christian with a drinking curse....doesn’t make him a non Christian
Britney from the Louisiana Mississippi line was I’m sure raised as such
Los Angeles chews up the ambitious young split tails and spits em out...
You can see anxiety in her eyes
She was comely as a young thing admittedly and talented
Shame
She should have gone home and kept her money and married and raised horses...
She had the brass ring
Prudence says to let it go at some point ..
Good advise imo.
She was part of the disney abuse machine. She never had a chance
We need our celebrities. Without them, how would we know what to do, how to think, how to vote, how to live, how to worship, how many pieces of toilet paper to use when we go to the bathroom ?
Didn’t he yell “FREEEEDOM!” real loud and get his head chopped off while smiling at a baby? Well, then, he should be dead. How can he tell Britney anything if he’s dead?
