SEATTLE — A plea from Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz to put the guns down as the city and county see a spike in shootings.
Concerned community leaders had a special meeting with the chief to address the wave of violent crime.
“This last year and a half, I don’t see it slowing down,” Diaz said.
It was a hard and honest conversation Tuesday evening at Emerald City Bible Fellowship Church.
Diaz, the pastor and community advocates tried to find ways to curb the gun violence rocking the city and county.
“I need those guns put down,” Diaz said.
Even the sacred halls of the church have seen bloodshed—after a young father, Omari Wallace, was shot to death there in March.
“In many ways we’re killing each other like flies and that is not how it’s supposed to be,” said Pastor Harvey Drake.
“We’re desperate right now, you know, we can’t have one more shooting,” said Victoria Beach, SPD African American Community Advisory Chair."
The King County Prosecutor’s Office said so far this year, officers have responded to at least 68 murders or potential murders that include shootings and stabbings.
That's nearly the same number the county had in all of 2016 at 69.
There were 90 in 2019 and 146 murders last year.
“We’re not moving forwards," Beach said. "We’re going backwards. Why?"
“At some point we have to help people understand how to revalue each other,” Drake said.
Diaz said police have been focused on targeted operations to get illegal guns off the streets.
He says after losing almost 275 officers since 2020, the staffing shortages have impacted how police can balance patrols, other crimes, and build relationships in the community.
He said relational policing is critical in fighting gun violence.
“When you have relationships, people are always wanting to talk about what’s going on in the community and that helps solve crime,” Diaz said.
Community leaders and pastors sidy they are working to fight the, “no snitch” mentality with young people, as well as conflict resolution skills.
Free ANTIFA!
Blame the object, not the trigger puller!
Black Lives ... well, never mind, so long as they shoot each other.
America doesn’t have a gun problem. It has a ghetto problem
That problem should resolve itself in time.
Exactly the plan. Defund the police, empty the prisons, let gang bangers across the border, don’t charge the lawless with any crime, and then demand gun confiscation.
See how this works?
No, we have a Marxist-subversives-in-government problem.
You happen to work in a city that thinks the police aren’t needed. I think the city is reaping the rewards of that stupidity. Until the voters wake up and realize that laws make the distinction between tribes and civil society, you’re fighting a losing battle.
“At some point we have to help people understand how to revalue each other,” Drake said.
LOL. Good luck with that. It has taken decades of planning and scheming by the Left to get things to this level of barbarism.
Lots of criminals out there. Message for the black community: Go Fix Yourself.
Bonus tip: Increasing the number of defenseless potential victims out there will NOT shrink the criminal class.
You first.......................
Two thugs watching TV:
(camera on Diaz):
Diaz: I need those guns put down
Thug 1: Golly, Arthur! The Police Chief says we should put our guns down
Thug 2: By Gosh that is the right thing to do, Melvin! I am so glad he thought of that.
Thug 1: I am going to sell my Tek 9 and give the proceeds to help the poor.
Thug 2: Me, too. I wonder of the church can help us
“At some point we have to help people understand how to revalue each other,” Drake said
Hopefully the city council revalues this idiot’s contract.
“I need those guns put down,” Diaz said.
no... you need those THUGS PUT DOWN!!!
“We’re not moving forwards,” Beach said. “We’re going backwards. Why?”
The root cause is that we are a Pagan society. We are in open rebellion against God, and this is what happens. All the do-gooder sentimentality and Humanist, self-empowering moralizing will never restrain sin.
What needs to be ‘put down’ are the trigger pullers. If you are at a riot and you pull a gun on someone, you can apply for your ‘due process’ in the next life.
I need those donuts put down!
It’s primarily street rats eliminating fellow street rats.
The problem is not guns, definitely in the hands of private citizens for their personal self defense. The problem is criminals that use them to or while committing crimes. Get them off the streets and out of your community—dead and buried, else in jail.
I know several Seattle cops, they refer to Diaz as ‘The Toad’.
