The Taliban’s rapid advance through northern Afghanistan continued on Sunday with more than a dozen districts falling to the militants, as Britain entered the final days of its two-decade deployment to Afghanistan.

More than 300 members of the Afghan security forces fled across the border into Tajikistan to escape the militants, and Badakhshan and Takhar provinces are now largely under Taliban control, beyond the respective regional capitals.

We gave them every chance to create a stable, and free country. Screw them. They deserve the Taliban.

I remember Bush mumbling that they were fighting us because they were jealous of our freedoms, didn’t like our freedoms, or did like our freedoms but wanted to fight anyway. Eventually, it boiled down to keeping our military there bc: 1) for the most part, the Afghan Army that we trained and equipped with the expenditure of American blood and treasure for 20 years won’t be fighting as witness this mess; and, 2) it ultimately had something to do with protecting women’s rights. Thank you, Dick Cheney and his traveling neocons.

The ChiComs will bide their time until the NATO pullout is complete. Then they’ll put the Taliban in labor camps making iPhones a cheap stuff for dollar stores.

Afghan war was one thing due to Bin Laden given sanctuary there. But much bigger blunder was to attack Iraq. That is what really destabilized middle-east and created resurgence of Al Qaeda.

It’s an interesting situation.
China will inherit whatever we leave in Afghanistan.

An Afghanistan- be it Taliban or Afghan or both- powerful enough to stand up to China is in our and their interest.

Bush thought he could morph the tribal Afghans into western style democracy.

lol. I get that hating the bushes is a lazy spectator sport at FR, but the use of force in afganhistan passed nearly unanimously in both houses of congress, and had 90% approval by the american public.

I know it’s easier to be cowardly and conform to the screams of the mouth breathers, but that’s just a retarded thing to say, as a fact of history.

I 100% agree with you. Iraq was done simply because “They plotted to kill my Daddy!!” Saddam was an A88hole, but he kept Iran and the religious nut jobs at bay.

Right? Thought it would work in Iraq as well. Pfft!

The current Afghani government is gong to fall to the Taliban. No doubt about it. It’s only a matter of time. So I can’t think of a single reason why any Afghani would want to fight, let alone die, for that government.

A smart - but dishonorable - move for any Afghani soldier these days would be to desert to the Taliban. That way, it’s less likely that he’ll be executed in the slaughter that’s sure to come.

As others have noted, this is all brought to you courtesy of George W. Bush. Obama, Trump, and now Biden - they’re nothing more than bit players here.
