Let’s start at the beginning — “1776,” that is. This 1972 musical based on the Broadway show of the same name recounts the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Think “Hamilton” without hip-hop music.

Yankee Doodle Dandy... loved all my life and just watched with commentary by TCM that Cagney was accused of being communist sypathizer and making this movie cleaned up his image. Disturbing.
I never saw the stage version, which I expect I would have liked better. To me, the movie 1776 felt like a filmed version of a stage play, which often leaves me cold. My favorite movie musicals (like, say, Sound of Music) don’t feel like a filmed stage play.
