Netanyahu remains defiant, calls ouster attempt ‘fraud of the century’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is coming out swinging against the coalition of opposition groups that have come together to oust him, calling it the “fraud of the century.”

In televised remarks to the Israeli people Sunday night, the defiant leader made it clear he was not going down without a fight.

“This is not unity, healing or democracy. This is an opportunistic government. A government of capitulation, a government of fraud, a government of inertia. A government like this must not be formed,” the Israeli leader said of the unity pact between opposition groups to oust him after 12 years in power.

By Monday morning, top negotiators for the major parties involved had hit snags in discussions about power-sharing, according to the Jerusalem Post.

Still, the coalition appears to mark the greatest challenge to Netanyahu’s hold on power as prime minister.

The coalition, put together following weeks of bipartisan negotiations, was organized after Israel came under attack by a barrage of rockets launched by Hamas from the Gaza Strip this month, sending residents fleeing for shelter as air raid sirens blared across Israel’s cities.

Hamas claimed the attacks came in response to a clash between Israeli police and Palestinian worshipers at the Al-Aqsa mosque at the close of Ramadan.

Um so hi...he was the first world leader to congratulate Biden on winning election when the results were still barley in. Trump deleted Bibi from Twitter following list.

Bibi was the first world leader to congratulate Biden on his election win.

Trump promptly deleted him from Twitter.

Mexico and Russia’s presidents waited the longest — wanted court process to play out.

Er, Israel doesn’t have “Prime Ministers for Life”. At least, not yet.

They do have elections. Elections can be stolen.

True. Is there any evidence of this? There was plenty of the theft of the Presidency here. But I haven’t yet seen anything out of Israel.

Gosh, Bibi, that sounds awfully similar to what many of us were saying last November, back when you were one the FIRST "world leaders" to accept the results without question and congratulate "President-Elect Joe Biden" on his big "victory" immediately after the election.

What goes around, comes around...

That's an old link commenting on the Sept. 2019 election.

Israel has had four elections over the past two years, the latest was the March 23, 2021 Israeli legislative election, where Bibi and Likud did much BETTER than in the Sept. 2019 election and won a clear plurality of seats, which they continue to hold now. Bibi's old rival from 2019 Benny Gantz did very poorly in that election, and the "main" leftist opposition party in Israel, Labor, is a shell of its former self.

I don't remember anyone Netanyahu's government crying "fraud!" back in March and arguing Likud actually won more seats than the media projected. If he wants to claim it NOW because some coalition of other smaller political parties found a way to cobble together a majority 3 months later, he doesn't have a very strong case. Trump had a much better case (which the MSM ignored), given that Trump was clearly winning in 6 swing states on election night, only to see ALL SIX of those states magically flip to Biden overnight.

Israel's multi-party system and "joint list" slates where different parties win together as a group make it much harder than the United States to outright steal seats and flip election results (it's why I've argued for years that the electoral college votes should be allocated by congressional district instead of winner-take-all in 48 states), but I have no doubt fraud occurs there, like in any other country. The question is on what scale it occurred and whether it changed the outcome of any seats. I don't think crying "fraud!" is going to accomplish anything but of course he's welcome to try.

Things are way more serious over there in Israel a tiny country surrounded by blood out of me and they want them all dead

At least here we’re just getting invaded by Mexicans who has a lot more mostly family oriented Catholic with a few bad apples drug dealers

There’s not a lot of suicide bomber Mexicans

There’s not a lot of Mexicans live in rockets at our cities

There’s not a lot of Mexicans in Mexico city getting out there every day and saying “death to America death to Americans”

And we can talk about the economic impact the societal impact and everything is being invaded by Mexico but again I’ll take Mexicans over Palestinians Syrians has Bella and those types

Netanyahu’s always playing to American headlines, always going for Republican triggers.

When he was indicted in three separate criminal casea, it was a “witch hunt”, a “coup”; news reporting the extent of the evidence against him became “fake news”, and now when a political rival sucker-punches him in the gut, it’s “fraud”.

Netanyahu’s calling Bennett a liar for joining with Centrists when he said he wouldn’t. But “fraud” travels better to the US and packs a stronger punch.

It’s not fraud -— and certainly not like the fraud we experienced in 2020, although BiBi’s hoping you believe it is.

I agree. Bibi was raised in Pennsylvania and if there's one thing he's excellent at, it's knowing how to play to an American audience and how to manipulate things for his benefit.

IMO, he put his finger to the wind after the Nov. 2020 elections, saw that the odds were against Trump, so he quickly threw Trump under the bus and hedged his bets that Biden would be installed as POTUS. Bibi is a fair weather friend and ALWAYS does what's best for Bibi.

The "witch hunt" stuff when he was indicted on corruption charges was for consolidating pro-Israel American conservatives in his corner, ditto with the "election fraud" rhetoric now, which really doesn't make sense in the context of how Israeli politics work.

Ironically the ONE issue where he's actually delivered is being the sole world leader to be constantly vigilant on the threat posed by Iran's islamofacist regime, and the fact he's always been kick-ass in military actions to defend Isareli's sovereignty.

I have no sympathy for him if he's kicked out now in an underhanded way, IMO it's well deserved karma. And the reality is Naftali Bennett is not only MORE conservative than Bibi, he's Bibi former Chief of Staff and a former close political ally, so this "you're not a true right-winger if you don't support Bibi, this is an evil plot for a socialist takeover of Israel" argument doesn't hold water. Granted, his "coalition partner" Yair Lapid is a squishy "centrist", so I don't expect the new "government" to accomplish anything besides getting rid of Bibi. No hypocrisy here though -- we just had a similar situation here where conservatives and moderates united to replace Liz Cheney with Elise Stefanik, remember?

Nah, I don't even give him credit for this. BiBi TALKS a strong game when it comes to Iran, and has for 25 years, but hasn't neutralized or even dented the threat. He's dusted off his greatest hits and is back to threatening he will take action on his own. Maybe he's serious this time. Who knows?

I don't give him high marks for keeping Israeli's safe. Sure, every few years he fights with Hamas, but never to a meaninful outcome. And those tunnels --- for the life of me I don't understand why Netanyahu didn't order the IDF to take them out earlier --- like when the Mossad told him they were nearing completion.

I guess he waited for the cameras.

Observations

1) Bennett is no better than Ben Sasse if he’s willing to team with the left just for power or to get Bibi

2) For the umpteenth time, proportional representation giving everyone who gets 2 or 3% seats is RIDICULIUS

3) Palestinian parties being allowed to run in Israel is also ridiculous, might as well allow Nazis, I won’t discount a little fraud but the main problem is the absurd electoral system

4) Av Lieberman who started all these multiple elections by not joining Bibi in the first place over some petty issue can continue to go F himself

5) The left could probably be kept out if Bibi would just go and Likud gets a new leader. Sounds fine to me.
