No More Church Bans: CA Gov. Newsom Ordered to Pay $1.35M in Legal Fees for Shutting Down Churches

This week, a California District Court approved the settlement of Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry's lawsuit against Gov. Gavin Newsom, establishing the first state-wide permanent injunction in the country against COVID restrictions on churches and places of worship.

The Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit religious rights law firm, represented Harvest Rock in their legal proceedings against the governor and the state.

Under the settlement agreement, discriminatory restrictions on worship and religious gatherings may no longer be applied to churches and places of worship. According to the permanent injunction, churches and places of worship may never again have discriminatory restrictions placed on them that are not equally applied to a long list of "critical infrastructure" or "essential services" as outlined in several Supreme Court precedents cited in the settlement.

Exactly. The taxpayers were illegally locked out of their churches & now have to pay for the "privilege".

It's the same garbage over & over again. Politicians commit illegal crimes & the taxpayers are on the hook for it. Generally, the politicians then move on to another gov't job, and are never held accountable.

Furthermore, at this point, it really doesn’t matter as the churches are open now anyway.

It’s become very obvious that the governors had too much power during all this. There has to be some kind of legislative oversight....Of course in NYS, that means nothing.

“Sounds like a win to me. Is it?”

A win would have been a small jail term such as 30 days, a personal fine say $10,000, and an agreement not to run for public office again for the next 10 years. Seems fair.

I agree with you that Newsome knew what he was doing, that it was contrary to court rulings, and he then did it anyway.

For you or me that would have probably landed us in some kind of personal trouble.

I think the governor personally, not the state, has to pay the fine.

The next question is, who gets the legal fees? Obviously the attorneys representing the churches are pro Christian rights lawyers. But the money probably also goes to the state's legal fees too.

We used to have a constitution that indicated governmental limits. Wonder whatever happened to that thing...

Abuse of power, add that to the recall effort and make him pay back the taxpayers.

It’s a win if Newsome has to pay the fees out of his own pocket. He was the defendant and “the defendant” was ordered to pay the attorney fees. However it will probably be paid out of the general fund.

IOW, by me.

Newsom doesn’t have to pay a dime. The California taxpayers will foot the bill.
