The Department of Justice is investigating the death of a Black man with a mental illness at a South Carolina jail, as newly released body camera footage showed deputies repeatedly deploying stun guns before he became unresponsive.
Jamal Sutherland died on Jan. 5 at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston after deputies attempted to remove him from his cell to attend a bond hearing for a misdemeanor assault charge that morning, according to a state prosecutor investigating the incident
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office released hours of body camera footage Thursday night at the request of Sutherland's family, who are calling for the officers involved to be fired.
Sutherland suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, his family said at a press briefing Friday. He had been at a behavioral health care clinic before going to jail following a fight at the clinic, according to Mark Peper, a lawyer representing the family.

Hmm… maybe they should have rescheduled the man’s bond hearing and let him calm down. No need to go nuts on the guy and taser him to death.
I think every letter in black should be capitalized because of how important they are.
sad but true, and what’s even sadder are the black people who work hard and do not commit crime, still vote and support this thug culture and BLM.
So if he was mentally ill, why did his family, who is now pretending to care so much about him, not lift a finger to help him and put him in a professional care facility where he could receive treatment and not be on the streets where he became a danger to himself and others?

We’re quickly reaching the point where criminals - sane and insane - will be allowed to dictate the terms of their arrest, confinement, trial and release. Whatever is convenient for guilty is what will be tolerable, nothing more, ever.
It’s going to just like the Kurt Russel movie, ‘Escape From New York,’ only NYC is going to be replaced by the entire country.

Perhaps you can offer an explanation of why that is. One black co worker said it was from the ‘hate whitey’ message the black middle class constantly gets in church every Sunday.
It is not that easy. Our brilliant justice system has made sure you cannot do this to an adult without their consent. The courts and a judge have to force this on adults through legal means. Even with elders who have dementia or alzheimer’s.
I’ve been in contact with several Africans over the years. Their opinions of Black Americans are very close to George Wallace.
The Sheriff is responsible.
All jails constantly must deal with the mentally ill , and the Officers must be trained to safely control these inmates.
It can be done safely with properly trained personnel
