Historian: Ronald Reagan Would Disapprove of Cheney Treatment

The treatment of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., by her fellow House Republican leaders and colleagues "simply for having a contrary opinion" on former President Donald Trump is appalling, and late President Ronald Reagan would never have approved, presidential historian Craig Shirley wrote in a new opinion piece.

"Cheney's only crime of course is her belief that the GOP needs to wash its hands of Donald Trump," Shirley, a biographer for late President Ronald Reagan, wrote for Townhall. "Otherwise, she's a tried and true conservative. And our movement is big enough to accommodate personal opinions.

It’s not just a contrary opinion. The idiot voted to impeach Trump.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Exactly. You’d think his analysis might take this minor detail into account.
Tolerating disagreement within the party is not an unlimited principle. It doesn’t mean you can do outrageous stuff with impunity, especially as a leader. When you brazenly antagonize your own base, it’s reasonable that you might face a consequence such as being removed from your plush leadership spot. And when that happens, it doesn’t mean our “democracy is imperiled” or whatever.
Yeah, like she knows! Is she channelling Reagan or something?
The only evidence the “historian” offers that Reagan would accept Liz Cheney’s leadership is that he accepted GHW Bush, which rather makes the opposite point ( Although Bush wasn’t openly derisive and defiant of the President like Cheney.)
Bush was in fact Reagan’s single biggest mistake, purging his staff, destroying his legacy, undermining his economic and other policies and finally losing the base and the office for the party.
IMO Liz Cheney is one of the all time top violators of Reagan’s 11th commandment, along with Romney. For that Reagan would have, or at least should have, relieved anyone like her of power..
Apparently this douche nozzle “forgot” about the vote to impeach her own party’s President. Look at the D’s who voted to impeach Bill Clinton (Virgil Goode, Ralph Hall, Paul McHale, Charles Stenholm and Gene Taylor). Why haven’t you heard of them?
Reagan nor Trump were far from perfect even with being magnificent.
The speak no ill of those in one's own party especially ex presidents is long gone. Reagan would be appalled of the current GOP and what morons call conservative and being labeled as conservative. I remember the a-holes invoked Reagan to compare to Barry Soetoro. They now invoke Reagan to attack Trump and defend a loser like Cheney.
So, if Liz Chaney had supported the attempt to impeach Ronald Reagan because of Iran-Contra, Reagan would have approved of that?
Cheney’s “crime” is supporting Democrats and defacto the progressive agenda. There’s absolutely nothing conservative about that.
Wasn’t the eleventh comment of Reagan to not fight the party?
“Historian: Ronald Reagan Would Disapprove of Cheney Treatment..”
Does this really apply to Cheney. She kicked the Republicans to the curb.
We are in different times. I don’t much think Reagan would favor the uniparty or Pubs like Cheney who would undermine grass-roots Pub
Historian: Ronald Reagan Would Disapprove of Cheney Treatment
...and?
Reagan could have built the wall. He didn't. Neither did his chosen successor, Bush I. Neither did Bush I's chosen successor, Bush II. Trump is the first president who actually tried to secure our border, only to be thwarted by worms like Liz Cheney. Enough.
“Shirley is one of the good ones, so I don’t discount his opinion...just disagree.”
His name floated to the top of the punch list, so he had to say something disparaging about Trump. Notice, the article disparages Trump and his supporters — cult of personality, etc. Cult of personality is getting a big workout lately.
"Cheney's only crime of course is her belief that the GOP needs to wash its hands of Donald Trump,"
And our only "crime" is that we wish to wash our hands of Liz.
See how that works?
No of course Liz Cheney, the "historian" and their ilk don't because they apparently don't have any self awareness.
Yours is the best take I have read so far. I would add that you can’t brazenly antagonize your own base, using the opposing party’s talking points and nastiest, most unfair caricatures of your side, and expect no consequences.
And I say that as a Craig Shirley fan - he has written some of the best books on Reagan. That talent clearly gives him no wisdom on the current situation, though.
“never speak ill of a fellow GOP representative or Senator”.
He said once a republican that was voted in as a republican candidate for a position that, although we may not like that candidate, we need to get behind them in the general election.
What Reagan failed to understand is that during the beginning of his term, the scum socialists infiltrated the GOP and swung it to the left.
It’s not for “simply for having a contrary opinion.”
She’s been a DS swamp creature her entire life. That acorn didn’t fall far from the tree, either.
She voted FOR impeachment against Trump when she had to have known the Article of Impeachment was a 100% cooked-up, false charge.
That’s far more than having a contrary opinion. She was trying to inflict damage a fellow Republican while showing solidarity with globalist, DS Democrats.
I assumed “Shirley” the biographer was female. Read he/his for she/her.
It is not just her disagreement with Donald Trump that we find objectionable. It is that she chooses to counter most things that the Republicans stand for. Simply put, she is a jackass!!!
