Safe Sweden faces up to wave of women's killings

Six women have been killed in just five weeks in Sweden, reigniting debates about domestic violence in a country usually praised for its gender equality.

The deaths span three regions and three generations, but in almost all cases there has been a common thread: the arrest of a man they had had a close relationship with.

Two of the killings took place in broad daylight: one in a rural town centre in the south of the country, another at a train and bus station in Linkoping, a university city south of the capital.

In Flemingsberg, a low-income Stockholm suburb packed with tower blocks clad in primary colours, a woman was stabbed in the apartment she shared with four young children. The man arrested on suspicion of her murder is someone she reportedly knew well.

Victim surveys are generally considered to be the best gauge of the actual level of crimes.

Which is why you don't compare a poor gauge to the best gauge and call the difference "33 times as many" occurrences.

Can you specify which of the sources I compared is a "poor gauge".

For Sweden I linked to the official crime victimization study produced by Brå, the statistics arm of the Swedish Ministry of Justice.

For the U.S. I provided a link to the equivalent official crime victimization study of the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Statistics.

If I did the math wrong, please go ahead and correct my math. And if you know of a better source for crime victimization statistics than the ones I provided well then (to quote the sage) "Ahm all ears".

You are wrapped around the axle on the term “reported.”

Fair point. I should have just told you that you used the wrong word (the data I provided was not for reported crimes) and left it at that.
