Indonesia's sunken submarine may have been hit by a powerful force known as an internal wave

As an Indonesian navy submarine crewed by 53 men glided below the surface of the Bali Sea during a routine training exercise, it may have been hit by an invisible but powerful force that dragged them to the deep.

Indonesian navy officials suspect an internal solitary wave, known to occur in the seas around Bali, may have caused the sinking of KRI Nanggala 402, and the loss of its 53 crew.

The vessel sank to a depth of 838 metres, far beyond the reach of rescuers.

As the personal effects of crew members floated up and the oxygen supply on board slowly dwindled, officials said there was no chance anyone survived.

The question remained: What went wrong?

Many theories have been put forward but authorities now say there is evidence an underwater wave — that can exert an intense vertical pull below the sea surface — occurred in the Bali Sea around the very time the submarine disappeared last Wednesday morning.

I also vote for the idea a giant kraken took them down.

My first thought was Indonesia has Subs ?

then I looked at the cia factbook

Indonesia has the world’s fourth-largest population. It is predominantly Muslim and has the largest Muslim population of any country in the world. The population is projected to increase to as much as 320 million by 2045. A government-supported family planning program.

...angles and dangles is a hoot.

We had some blow valves that failed to open. As a result you had a big bubble of air on one side only. This tilted the sub way beyond anything normal. Of course I didn't know this at the time . I just knew I was not going to let that damn sub kill me and ran back to the engine room to do whatever I could do.

What about internal waves... you run into any of them?

Occam’s razor suggests a boo-boo during the torp drill.

What isn’t said is that as soon as they reached crush depth, the report from the implosion could likely be heard by modern submarines around the world. That loud.

If the torp detonated on board first, that would have been heard as well. So it was likely a torpedo door problem. Water rushing in is brutal to a submarine. The German submarine U-1206 was sunk by an improperly used high pressure toilet.

I am going to go full conspiracy theory. A Chinese submarine sank it with a new top secret stealth torpedo! /S

If it was an internal wave, who or what created it?

If the “personal effects of crew members floated up” it means the hull cracked open which means it doesn’t matter how many hours of oxygen they supposedly had left.

What? What kind of a question is that? Why, if you knew anything about submarines, you'd know that an internal wave can come from... well, something on the inside! ...the sub! You've got the waves outside, they're called external waves, see, and then... there's... inside! Don't you understand science at all? Internal waves, big problem for those who sail in the depths of the salty sea, let me tell you.

For some strange reason, I'm thinking of the fate of EgyptAir flight 990 back in 1999.

The NTSB's report stated that the impact was "a result of the relief first officer's flight control inputs", but did not determine a specific reason for the relief first officer's alleged actions. The ECAA concluded that the incident was caused by mechanical failure of the aircraft's elevator control system. The report suggested several possibilities for the cause of the accident, focusing on the possible failure of one of the right elevator's power control units. However, the NTSB dismissed the ECAA report after it was found that no scenario could explain the doomed flight's final movements other than an intentional human act.

he cockpit voice recorder (CVR) recorded the captain excusing himself to go to the lavatory, followed 30 seconds later by the first officer saying in Egyptian Arabic "Tawkalt ala Allah," which can be translated as "I put my trust in God."

A minute later, the autopilot was disengaged, immediately followed by the first officer again saying, "I rely on God." Three seconds later, the throttles for both engines were reduced to idle, and both elevators were moved 3° nose down.

The first officer repeated "I rely on God" seven more times before the captain suddenly asked repeatedly, "What's happening, what's happening?" The flight data recorder (FDR) reflected that the elevators then moved into a split condition, with the left elevator up and the right elevator down, a condition that is expected to result when the two control columns are subjected to at least 50 lb (23 kg) of opposing force.

At this point, both engines were shut down by moving the start levers from run to cutoff. The captain asked, "What is this? What is this? Did you shut the engines?" The captain is then recorded as saying, "get away in the engines" (this is the literal translation that appears in the NTSB transcript), followed by "shut the engines". The first officer replies "It's shut".

The final recorded words are the captain repeatedly stating, "Pull with me" but the FDR data indicated that the elevator surfaces remained in a split condition (with the left surface commanding nose up and the right surface commanding nose down) until the FDR and CVR stopped recording. /blockquote>

Not that know of. I do know the sea can make different thermal layers. The Soviets figured out how to hide better using them. Since you do have these layers it is possible for a wave to travel in one.

What went wrong?

We'll never know - but by Occam's Razor their torpx involved a mechanical failure that flooded the boat.

Having talked with some in the business - there is such a thing as that wave.

The only problem with the story is that the wave don’t move that fast. The crew would have had to all be asleep on the job for it to take them down.
