Facing an income shortage from the loss of tourism due to COVID-19, Zimbabwe has announced it will soon start selling rights to shoot 500 endangered elephants this year.
“We eat what we kill. We have a budget of about $25 million for our operations which is raised — partly — through sports hunting, but you know tourism is as good as dead at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Tinashe Farawo, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, told CNN.
The African forest elephant is now on the critically endangered species list and the savannah elephant is classified as endangered.

Now it is primarily the Woke that are Ugly Americans, who think they should dictate to other countries especially when it comes to promoting Sodomy.
I agree with you. This is bad. I can see Hunter Biden doing it for kicks but no compassionate human being doing it otherwise.
I don’t see how more rich American shooters going there and funding a government that was originally inspired by Communist ideals will help with that.
Please inform me.
How much of that 50K-500K do you think is actually helping ‘poor villagers’?
So you hate “rich Americans,” just like a good Commie.
I don’t hate wealth, or wealthy people.
I do despise individuals who don’t think about the possible consequences of their ‘enjoyments’.
Time spent with an appreciative and comely lass in the hunting lodge?
If I were you my Friend I would be far more concerned with Crony Capitalism between the US Gov’t, Big Tech, and the Communist Chinese Gov’t. Not to mention the importation of cheap labor from India and south of our border destroying our middle class.
The money spent by Hunters in countries like Zimbabwe for The Hunt is a pittance in the Grand Scheme of things. Not to mention that such countries are no threat whatsoever to the USA. If people like you worried more about the above-mentioned issues and actually got off your asses to do something about it our country would not be in the position it is currently in.
That said, to answer your question, enough of that money goes to the anti-poaching effort to have a demonstrable impact. And, it brings a great deal of help to the local tribal villages. Money that they could never dream of in their wildest dreams.
Does much line politicians’ pockets, well DUH, where on this earth does that not happen? If you know of any country so perfect that there is No Money Corruption please let us all know what country that is.
But Zimbabwe is utterly, breathtakingly, corrupt and,as a result, you just know that every penny will wind up in the Swiss bank accounts belonging to "the usual suspects".
I’m just waiting for someone to call me a ‘Nazi’.
That seems to be how internet arguments are traditionally ended...
Again, you seem to be awfully sure of what you state as to how the Zimbabwean government uses all of your individual American discretionary funds.
Very thoughtful post and very noble of you. For me, I support the Save the Whale foundations. Because I haven’t had the chance to harpoon one yet.
I have an old bumpersticker. It’s a whale, pleading with people to ‘Save the Humans’.
Let me be so clear even you can understand, I don’t give a damn what the Zimbabwean gov’t does with what they skim off the top. In the Grand Scheme Zimbabwe is a non-factor. I do know, and care what good my money does for the local Tribesmen and their families. I do care that my money funds anti-poaching efforts in Africa.
Again, I suggest your fixation on petty corruption in countries that are no threat to the USA or our way of life is misplaced. Your concern should be with Corruption in our own Gov’t and its relationship with anti-American Corporations and Communist China.
My main concern wrt this thread, is the animals - I have no assurance that viable animals won’t be killed, or that the government there will enforce anything.
I’m also concerned with funding a nasty government.
But you go on, and do whatever you like. That’s on you.
Not getting stomped?
Has the realization hit you that the only reason any species exists today is because we allow it. Were it not for their fur, meat or other things they provide we’d have no use for them. If cows were not tasty they probably wouldn’t exist. Were it not for the meat, the revenue and other products generated from these hunts they would serve no purpose at all and be nothing but a burden on the environment and most likely just killed off and be gone forever. Most of your African game serve no purpose unless they can generate income. No different than on the ranch here, Mountain Lions and Coyotes are shot on sight, they serve no purpose and actually cost you money.
“My main concern wrt this thread, is the animals - I have no assurance that viable animals won’t be killed, or that the government there will enforce anything.”
Viable animals will be killed at a rate that will make your heart stop if, Trophy Hunting Dollars stop. Anti-Poaching efforts are funded to a very great extent by the serious money Trophy Hunters pay for the privilege. And, we DO NOT TAKE any breeding-age animal that is threatened. The ONLY exception is if a Predatory animal is killing tribesmen and their wives and children. When a big cat goes rogue and begins killing Villagers there is to Tag Fee to hunt that animal.
The meat animals you are suggesting have been bred for the purpose for centuries - they are not large-brained wild animals.
Some people have an aversion to eating horse meat - and I share that. Civilization was built on the backs of horses, and not eating them should be an honor we bestow - not for them, but for our own edification.
I guess you haven’t tried eating an eagle, a mouse, a grasshopper, or CROW.
For some reason, we allow all of those to live and prosper.
