Facing an income shortage from the loss of tourism due to COVID-19, Zimbabwe has announced it will soon start selling rights to shoot 500 endangered elephants this year.

“We eat what we kill. We have a budget of about $25 million for our operations which is raised — partly — through sports hunting, but you know tourism is as good as dead at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic,” Tinashe Farawo, a spokesman for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, told CNN.

The African forest elephant is now on the critically endangered species list and the savannah elephant is classified as endangered.

Remember the liberal meltdown over the hunting of Cecil the lion a few years ago? Will the same happen with the legal hunting of these elephants, since hunting offends the sensibilities of liberals and late night TV “comedians”????

Just asking.

As I understand it, the problem with elephant meat is the animal is so large that its body heat (as well as the climate where elephants live) causes the meat to spoil unless it is very quickly butchered.

This is brilliant, they can name and get pics of each Elephant,

Put up websites and a go fund me pages for each elephant,

The goal of Save the Elephants is just that, raise money to buy up the licenses so that no one else can.

Liberals will be fine as long as Black People are the ones doing the killing.

They should sell sponsorship rights so people can “adopt” individual elephants. Like getting a star named after you. If the sponsor stops paying, they can eat the elephant.

FYI, the elephants that are taken are old bulls. Well past their breeding age and near the end of their lives. These are the elephants that will end up as hyena food and vulture food but, when taken by hunters while still alive they can feed the local village for well over 6 months.

Apparently elephants are a real menace to farmers crops. Not sure where in Africa I saw that stated, but they come in eat and trample whatever the feel like, and they don’t get frightened away easily. Local deer totally destroyed our garden every time we planted one. A dozen tomato plants planted and a dozen eaten down to a stem tomatoes and all in one night. No hunting allowed around here. Now we just don’t plant anything. I can just imagine the amount of damage elephants can do

Shooting elephants for sport is unconscionable; and I doubt that anyone really needs to shoot them for food.

What is the point of shooting it? Just to prove oneself in some egotistical way?

Elephants are one of the most intelligent animals, and one of those with the largest brains on the planet. They exhibit emotional and social behaviors very similar to humans. Keeping them thriving and available for observation is very important to cognitive science.

We’d have no idea of what we might actually be doing by killing one just for ‘sport’.

I hope that nobody takes Zimbabwe up on this.

And once the money comes in and the elephants are saved, the ISIS poachers come in and take their cut.

And you are personally going to guarantee that only the old bulls are taken?

I doubt that the PTB in Zimbabwe are going to be so environmentally conscientious.

See post 11 and 13. There are apparently some benefits to hunting them.

I’m not a hunter, and have no dog in this fight.

So where is that bunch of hypocrites ‘Sierra Club’ when there is a real wrong? Those Elephants are probably smarter than the BLM vermin, and there’s no permit on them.
