A Raleigh teenager is in shock after one of his neighbors called police on him as he practiced an ROTC routine with a replica rifle.
Jathan Walthour recently joined the team at Sanderson High School in Raleigh. Tuesday night at about 9 p.m. he decided to practice outside in his neighborhood.
"I was walking throughout the road, I was marching down the street, as I saw the police arrive, I had my rifle on my shoulder," Walthour described.
A neighbor called police on the 16-year-old Black student.
“There is a man outside with a gun walking up and down our cul-de-sac,” the 911 call said.
Walthour credits training from a community program called ‘Police Explorers’ on how to properly handle the situation.
"I placed the gun down on the ground and walked away from it," he said. "And I kept my hands visible, away from my pockets and things because the officers recommend you keep your hands where the officers can see you."
Shawn Krest, Jathan’s Father, says the situation is unfortunate. Krest married Jathan’s mother about two years ago. He tweeted about his son’s experience.

The neighbor was a bit over the top, but the kid was a bit stupid. Of the two, the kid least offensive.
Idiots.
Sounds like a great program.
How is the media so fast in deciding the color of the youth is at play?
It is. I was Santa Cruz Sheriff Explorer
Right? The Left has worked hard to demonize anything having to do with guns, so of course this incident was caused by racism and not some Karen freaking out over seeing someone with a gun.
Our PD sponsors a Police Explorer program, and some of the graduates have made careers in law enforcement. I agree, excellent program.
Kudos to the kid for keeping his cool.
But, to the (white) father who said this is something that wouldn’t happen to him:
Mister, try marching up and down your street with a replica gun. You think your neighbor wouldn’t have thought you’d lost a few marbles? She would’ve called 911 on you, too.
Sheesh, who are these white people who’ve never had the police called on them? Where did they grow up? Not where I grew up, that’s for sure.
How often do whites do the same thing with guns? Never in my neighborhood, and I’m in rural Texas.
Sounds like setup, really no different than a fake noose.
That’s what I was thinking too.
I agree...sounds like a set up.
My daughter did ROTC at Penn State and they had fake rifles when in training on campus. 😂
So all the kids that are in this guys group are practicing in their neighborhoods?? I doubt it is even allowed by the ROTC. That's what ROTC practice sessions are for.
The 9-11 call does not mention “black”.
In the early 2000s, my daughter joined a colorguard team. A routine involved rifle-shaped wood sticks painted white. She was allowed to take one home to practice and forgot to take it back the next morning so she called me to bring it to the school. This was during a time when the school was on a hair trigger based on fears like Columbine, etc. I was incredibly nervous about the delivery. I called the school, told them of my intentions, disguised the stock in a huge whiteboard carrycase, and took it directly to the school office. I sweated the whole process because I didn’t want to either trigger panic or get myself arrested or shot. Btw, I am lily white. Anti-gun nuts don’t are about race.
Nah, he should have listened to Chelsea Handler, Cornell West and Don Lemon and not complied!
Sounds like the kid was trying to cause an incident. With the last several years of blacks and police and mass shootings, there is something wrong with the kid. We have been inundated with stories about supposedly oppressed blacks; and the separate issue of mass shootings. Idiotic or cynical of him (or who told him to do it) to think this could not arouse some incident or concern.
They want to move over to the HS property to continue their drills.
Got them to think out their proposed action and the LE response it would generate.
Fast forward, he is a AF vet and 20 years LE.
