JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With an estimated 4 million Americans behind on rent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has extended the eviction moratorium imposed during the pandemic until the end of June.
The moratorium, which halted evictions for people unable to make their rent payments, was set to run out on Wednesday. But the CDC said it felt families across the country needed more time and relief.
The extension was aimed at avoiding having people move in with loved ones or into homeless shelters as the risk of transmission of COVID-19 remains high.

I got rid of my rentals. But ai know a few that will probably lose theirs as they can’t afford to fix or maintain or repair damage caused by the type of people who mooch, so probably bankruptcy for them
Well if you’re a building owner, you’re done - no revenue to pay for things.
Simple question... by what authority?
Our in laws are in deep with two rental houses and no rent coming in. The tenants in one house are destroying it so probably $20,000-$30,000 when they finally get it back.
Who knew there was A CDC exemption to the third amendment.
Why is it just renters and not also people with mortgages? Will the renters eventually have to pay the back rent?
Yeah. Where in law does the CDC get this power?
A court already held that the CDC does not have the power/authority to issue the moratorium in the first place. Pretty bold of them to extend it after getting that warning. Its like they know that the laws dont apply to them or something. /s
Federal eviction moratorium?
Wow! Free housing! Find an empty house, or maybe just someone’s second home when the owners are away and move right in.
Isn’t this the Biden goal? New arrivals from south of the border need cheap housing, right? Why not free housing?
The CDC don’t you know, it’s right there between the lines of the Constitution.
What are you one of those dumb redneck white supremacy Trump supporting extremist Christians?

Seriously stupid on multiple levels.
For the landlord it means no income. Unless there is a corresponding waiving of his mortgage payments and/or taxes, the landlord could lose the property.
For the renter it means coming up with a huge chunk of change all at once or immediate eviction. I have read that landlords can start the eviction clock so that if they do not get that payment when the waiver ends, they can evict pretty much immediately.
Neither of these is a good situation, but both are caused by massive government overreaction to a “plague” with a +99% survival rate.
Politically, I don’t know if the renters will every be evicted.
“Will the renters eventually have to pay the back rent?”
Ostensibly, yes. There is a program where the feds are funneling “emergency” assistance through the state housing authorities to renters who are in debt, paying the landlords directly for at least some of the back rent. But that only happens if the tenant applies for the program and qualifies.
So the feds are already doing a backdoor debt forgiveness on this, but it won’t cover everyone, or everything they owe. Whoever is left owing after that is done is going to have to pay, or get evicted and sent to the collection agencies.
Well, the President and the governors do not have the power/authority to order people to wear masks when they walk around outside either.
But at this point they have whatever power they have the gall to seize, because nobody is stopping them.
Renters don’t have to pay rent, but, landlords still have to come up with money for property taxes, water/sewer/trash pickup, etc etc etc. SMH.
Just FYI, the federal eviction moratorium does not prevent eviction for other lawful causes such as damage to the rental property. That would be covered by whatever their local landlord-tenant code says.
