Fleischer predicts Democrats will nix filibuster for gun control

Fox News contributor and former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer on Wednesday predicted that Senate Democrats will move to nix the Senate filibuster on gun reform legislation after multiple deadly mass shootings.

During an interview on Fox’s “America’s Newsroom,” Fleischer, who served under former President George W. Bush’s administration, said that gun control is one of the issues at the “core” of the Democratic Party.

“I think this is going to be an issue that breaks the Senate,” he said. “It is so deep and fervent inside the Democratic Party that gun control is the answer.”

Fleischer went on to predict that Senate Democrats will “break the filibuster over this,” adding, “I don’t think they have any choice.”

“The base demands it, they demand action, they say thoughts and prayers are not enough,” he continued. “They’re going to try to get through whatever they can get through on 50 votes, and this will be the issue that they challenge the filibuster over.”

Co-host Bill Hemmer pointed out opposition to nixing the filibuster among moderate Democrats, particularly Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who told CNN on Tuesday that he would still advocate against it even if removing the rule would allow the passage of his bipartisan bill with Republican Sen. Pat Toomey (Pa.), which requires background checks on armed sales at gun shows and over the internet.

The bill goes short of mandating background checks in private transfers of firearms, which the broader House gun reform bills have included.

However, Fleischer said, “Manchin also said he would only support a bipartisan COVID bill, and of course, there was a partisan COVID bill and he supported it.”

“Manchin is always an open question,” he added. “I’m not sure I would take him at his word, particularly when the pressure mounts on the core issue that defines the modern day Democratic Party.”

Fleischer’s remarks come amid growing support among Democrats to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster needed to end debate on legislation. Ending the practice would return the Senate to a “talking filibuster,” in which senators need to physically be on the floor to block legislation

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has pledged to put forth a series of bills on the floor, which will likely force Democrats to take a position on removing the filibuster in order to move forward their desired policy proposals in the face of Republican opposition.

President Biden on Tuesday called on Congress to enact meaningful gun control legislation, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, as well as closing loopholes in background checks for firearms.

Biden’s call for further reforms included a demand that the Senate “immediately pass” two bills approved by the House earlier this year that would expand background checks on gun sales, and Schumer has vowed to take action on the legislation.

Other lawmakers have signaled that they would support removing the filibuster in order to move forward a range of other legislative reforms.

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) on Wednesday suggested he would support changing Senate rules should Republicans block voting rights legislation.

"All-out opposition to reasonable voting rights protections cannot be enabled by the filibuster; if forced to choose between a Senate rule and democracy itself, I know where I will come down," King wrote in an op-ed for The Washington Post.

I know only one kind of gun control.

A steady hand.

My understanding is that only about 33% of the population were favorable to rebellion against the King.

That is what I remember learning in History class, 1/3 favored independence, 1/3 remained loyal to King George, and 1/3 were indifferent or undecided, at least at the start. British policies over reacting to the separatists probably increased their support over time.

If the Dims do pass gun control bills, they will lose their majority in 2022. The pubbies might even gain a veto proof majority. Probably not, but it’s possible.

If we have free and fair elections, the Dems will be in the minority in the House and Senate. So, they are trying to entrench themselves through voting fraud so they can never lose. The other option is to rig the primaries so the establishment RINOs win over the MAGA candidates. They then win the general election, but even that is fake, but gives the illusion of a two party system. In fact it will still be the uniparty in control of D.C.

Don’t matter to me.

For the time being I’m a citizen of the state of Florida - we have a governor with guts, the actual president, and a YUGE state militia waiting to be called up.

That’s what might happen if the DC mafia invade our state - and why I own guns and ammo.

A lot of people are weak sux who feel sorry for themselves and pout and crybaby, but our state militia could easily count a million (one in 20 of our pop).

“Fleischer predicts Democrats will nix filibuster for gun control”

Good to hear. Lots of gun owners sat out the Georgia Runoffs (to teach the GOP a lesson), now they can start to learn that their tantrums have consequences.

tet68 :" The only reason the rats would nix the filibuster is if they believe they will never again be in the minority.

And that should frighten us all."

True that !
If they nix the filibuster, the Dims throw away any concept of the "The Republic".
They will rue the day they ever did so, and I don't care how much they get blessed by the complicit media,
the voting public will NEVER forget how they took away the voice of the opposition or minority, and of the people.
The GOP will make sure that all will hear about it in the next election year, and even into the Presidential election, and how the people lost their voice.

“It is so deep and fervent inside the Democratic Party that gun control is the answer.”

Yup. GUN CONTROL is the answer to TOTAL DOMINATION over the entire United States. Just like Saddam in Iraq; Just like Hitler and his Nazi hord; just like most nations led by DICTATORS (I.E. Dictator individual OR EVEN dictator legislatures!! I.E. our so called congress!!!). THIS is their "wet dream" (sorry ladies). But this is EVERYTHING they seek and desire. To destroy the 2d amendment and take away our guns. Not just those dreaded assault weapons, but ALL GUNS!!! Every stinking one of them. When Australia did this, HOME INVASION CRIMES JUMPED 450%!!! MOST of those were on wealthy or fairly well off OLDER ADULTS, who could no longer defend their homes or lives. Go look it up!! They made the people targets for attack. THIS will happen here BECAUSE it is WORSE here, with all these gangsters and hoodlums running loose in America. The entire country will BECOME CHICAGO ON A NIGHTLY BASIS. These criminals will loot, murder, rape and pillage daily in this country. Crime will jump 1,000% the first week. You can bet on it. It is every criminal in this nation's hope, that the LEGAL guns will be taken away and the criminals with all their illegal and STOLEN guns can then kill and rob and rape and do what they like any time they want to do it. Our murder rates will go up faster than a North Korean illegal missile.

Thankfully in that photo, the gun would not fire and he wound up hitting the Rabbi with the gun butt and knocking him to the ground and they stormed off mad!!! That is the old Rabbi that did the prayer at the end of the movie before Oskar rode away.

BS.
They won’t be able to get a majority in the Senate for gun control, or ending the filibuster.

You guys make me laugh! You seem to forget the D@ms have already ditched the fillibuster for specific issues, in the past - they'll just call gun ownership a 'National Health Crisis', and claim it requires emergency action like the Wuhanic Plague.

All of the so-called "moderate" D@ms will fold up like wet toilet paper, just like they did for Obama Care. A little back room arm twisting, a few quid pro quos, some meaningless public promises for window dressing, and - voila! - the votes appeared. If you think good old Joe from West Virginia will save the fillibuster OR Second Amendment, you're dreaming...
