Nevada governor proposes giving tech firms power to govern

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's governor on Friday unveiled a proposal that would allow technology companies to establish jurisdictions with powers similar to those of county governments, arguing the state needed to be bold to diversify its economy and pushing back against those who have likened the idea to company towns.

“This proposal is an exciting, unprecedented concept that has a potential to position Nevada as a global center of advanced technology and innovation, while helping to create immediate positive economic impact and shape the economy of the future,” Gov. Steve Sisolak said of his Innovation Zones idea. “As we’ve learned in the past, an emergency requires us to throw out the tried-and-true, discard the ‘How We’ve Always Done It’ manual and move on.”

Under the proposal, companies developing cutting-edge technologies that have at least 50,000 acres (200 sq. kilometers) of land and promise to invest $1.25 billion could establish “Innovation Zones." The zones would be governed by a board responsible for overseeing zoning, taxation, law enforcement and other government functions on their land. It would override local county regulations.

Google called it "nanotrenching".

I can’t say as to the depth being correct, but I literally watched AT&T run fiber down my street that way. It was buried about a foot down.

I also have watched Verizon/Frontier and AT&T do the same at many of my business clients.

Now, whether Google laid it too shallow or used the incorrect sealant is another story - but the general technique is industry standard and works just fine down here.

Also worth noting that the actual reason Google gave up was actually the Obama Admin’s Net Neutrality BS. *Everyone* stopped new fiber at that point; Verizon sold off almost all their fiber plant to Frontier rather than deal with the Obama version of Net Neutrality.

Waiting for the economy to recover organically isn’t working.

That's because we're NOT waiting for the economy to recover, we're still artificially killing it.

How many of your local bars and restaurants still have half their tables covered in 'Reserved' signs since they can't open at full capacity?

Does Wally World still have the line-gate things outside to force you to walk a ways around the fence to enter the store, left over from when they were only allowed to let 30 people in at a time?

How many businesses still have a sign on the front door that says "By order of His Majesty the Governor, we are required to tell you that the so-called 'free' State of Texas requires you to wear an at best inefficient, but most likely completely useless, mask upon entry, so everyone can feeeeeel safer."?

How many companies have started having meetings and events and conferences? (This is my industry [Corporate AV], and I'll give you a hint: it's still pretty much dead.)

How many concerts, theatres, football/baseball/hockey/etc games, and other entertainment venues are open and allowing you to buy tickets, without having to show "proof" of being a guinea pig for an experimental-use vaccine? Are they still only letting in maybe 10M people when the stadium holds 80M?

Does your kids' doctor still require you to sit in your car for ten or twenty minutes after your appointment time, waiting to be called so you the kid (and only one parent!) can be allowed in? Likewise for taking your dog to the vet's office; sit in the car to drop him off, not even allowed to go in to talk to the vet? (Yes, that's seriously what my vet is doing right now...)

How many schools still have half the kids trying to 'learn' via Chinese video software? If they even allow anyone onto campus?

Is the school nurse still required to send a kid home for a tenday if they pop a slight fever?

Is 'Dr' Fauci still popping up every couple days, changing his mind on whether you need a mask or not, what kind of mask, how many to wear at once, and so on?

Are HCQ and Ivermectin still on backorder everywhere, if your State even allows anyone to buy them?

Are people now dying regularly from cancer and infection and car crashes like they used to?

Reason: “country road” - with easier access right of ways.

Look up “Reedy Creek” and get back to me. Florida allowed Disney to incorporate as a government in the early 70s.

Yeah. I spent my entire 20+ year Army career during the Cold War. I walked the East-West German Border, sat in an OP on the Border during a sub-15 degree winter with three or four feet of snow on the ground while observing the Eastern side of the Border, fought and was wounded in Vietnam. ALL OF THIS was in defense of our Republic from SOVIET COMMUNISM, RED CHINESE COMMUNISM, NORTH KOREAN COMMUNISM, CUBAN COMMUNISM, LAIOTION COMMUNISM, AND LEFTIST LIBERAL AMERICAN COMMUNIST!! And NOW the idiots and fools in this country VOTED it in. I guess all I did was delay it another 20+ years as we all defended against it. It really sucks to think you wasted your life’s work in defense of the Republic to turn out as it is now!!!

Does the State of Nevada even manage 50,000 acres of land itself? ;-)
