Extinction threatens third of freshwater fish species, report finds

LONDON - Nearly a third of all freshwater fish species are threatened by extinction, according to a new report released by 16 conservation groups on Tuesday.

"The World’s Forgotten Fishes" says that 80 freshwater species — which make up more than half of all the world’s species — have already been declared extinct, with 16 disappearing in 2020 alone.

Conservation groups behind the report, including World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Global Wildlife Conservation, point to a combination of pressures on global freshwater fish populations, including habitat degradation, damming and draining of rivers and wetlands, pollution, introduction of invasive species, wildlife crime and the ever-increasing threat of climate change.

The study calls freshwater fish “undervalued," with the WWF's Stuart Orr saying freshwater fish are often forgotten in global debates about climate, biodiversity and global development.

“As we look to adapt to climate change and we start to think about all the discussions that governments are going to have on biodiversity, it’s really a time for us to shine a light back on freshwater,” he added.

Orr said a United Nations biodiversity conference taking place in China later this year will be a chance for governments to talk about the crisis and, for the first time, pay just as much attention to protecting and restoring freshwater life support systems as the world’s forests and oceans.

Wait... of the hundreds of thousands of species of fish, there’s only about 160 species of freshwater fish???

Sorry, I don’t believe a single word written here. And, if I did, I really wouldn’t care. It is like these people think they are to be believed. They have no credibility.

Deliberately misleading grammar.

“”The World’s Forgotten Fishes” says that 80 freshwater species — which make up more than half of all the world’s species — have already been declared extinct, with 16 disappearing in 2020 alone.”

There are several hundred thousand fresh-water fish species. Mere relative isolation of a particular creek can be enough to make its population of a given kind of fish be recognized as a separate species. And being blackwater vs whitewater is enough to isolate a stream. So this is deliberately setting an impossibly high and meaningless bar for conservation.

Funny how they failed to mention that new species are discovered all the time.

Here ya go, folks, your daily dose of climate change ‘disaster’.
Be sure to tune on tomorrow, and the day after, etc. for successive issues of ‘science’ as defined by the left.

Just keep these clowns away from designing machinery.

Agree this is BS— or 90% of the issue is in China.

Wonder what the real agenda is.

I suspect just general desire to hurt western industries, but maybe more.

Problem with this article is that they don’t give enough factual information, I don’t doubt that there is a problem, but without concrete A —-> B its just unfocused ululation, of which we’ve already reached saturation.

Water temperature is a big reason.

Trout, for example, are cold-water fish. A local river used to support them, but with development, the river temperature has risen and the trout disappeared (heated run-off).

Now, trout are not extinct as a species, just in this location. One has to travel hundreds of miles now to fish for the same fish.

Dk which is worse, the incompetent reporting or the incompetent “science” being used for propaganda purposes. And just for the record, when these people talk of ”extinction” they don’t mean what you think they mean. For them, “extinction” means they can’t find it in a stream or other isolated ecological niche where they used to find it. It may be plentiful in a nearby stream, like the once famous snail darter, but for them, it is more useful to cry about extinction than to do proper science.

There are more than 800 known freshwater fish species in North America alone. Worldwide, the number is over 10,000 species. Some species of freshwater fish, such as salmon and trout, are called... National Graphic.

We put millions of little fishies into the Great Lakes every year. I've eaten less than 10 kinds of fish in my 77 year lifetime.

The most wonderful tasting fish...Walleye from Canada.
