Finding the perfect parking spot is the bane of every driver’s existence and but sometimes the desire for the closest spot can put others in danger. You’ve seen it, people illegally parking in front of fire hydrants for easy access, but firefighters are teaching these inconsiderate parkers that this is a matter of life and death.
Yesterday New York firefighters had to smash a car’s windows as it was blocking a fire hydrant. The driver was also given a ticket by the New York Police Department.
The video has been viewed more than 90,000 times and has sparked a debate among Twitter users on whether or not the fire department should have broken the car windows or not. Video below:
Some Twitter users are in defense of the driver, with one saying: “It took more time breaking out the car windows and running the hose through the car to prove a point.
“The FD owes the owner new windows, repair of other damages, and interior detail. The owner is owed a ticket for parking in front of the hydrant.”
However, others believe that the fire department did the right thing, such as one Twitter user who responded to the suggestion that the driver should sue and said: “Yes, he/she did deserve this. Break the law, suffer the consequences.
“Most people know this will happen if you park in front of a hydrant and a fire breaks out. A judge would likely throw the suit out while laughing his butt off.”
Like it or not this expensive vehicle damage was well-deserved. Hydrants play a key role in firefighting, as the trucks themselves can only carry 500 gallons of water – enough to put out a “dumpster fire.”

One doesn’t want to kink the hose, which might have happened by running it another way.
Yea, if I see a fire near me, unlike this guy, I’ll make it a point to NOT block the hydrant.
No sympathy for the car owner but why couldn’t they have run the hose under the car?
Given that this is Delblasio’s NYC, he probably would have sustained more damage to his car had the fire department and police not been there responding to the fire.
They have done this before, for years........................
Probably because if the hose had ruptured, it would have done more damage to the car than just a broken window.
Liberals are complaining that the firefighters could have gone over the car, they can’t the size/weight of the hose doesn’t allow for bending around like that.
Probably because the car might drive over the hose, crimping or damaging it. Besides, what fun is that? Firefighters need to bust out windows from time to time and this situation provides them with some good practice.
Do you know why volunteer fire departments blow a siren long and loud whenever they get a call? It’s so the townspeople know they have a call and are getting their tax money’s worth.
The car owner is a moron and he’ll have to live down his selfishness for a lifetime.
I have as much sympathy for him as I do for people who refuse to pay the annual fire protection tax where they have them. Suddenly he has a fire and the FD shows up to protect the home next door and lets his burn.
In other words-No sympathy. They made their choice.
In your tagline, instead of a boolean operator, shouldn’t it be an assignment statement?
They usually put a short hose on it with a leaky coupling right in the middle of the ‘impediment’.
Do not mess with the FD. Had a friend who was a FF in rich suburban Chicago town. The town used to pick up the leaves raked out to the curb every fall - and it was great fun, some thought, to borrow daddy’s car and throw lit matchbooks into the long piles. Except one night, the flaming matchbook fell back into the car as they drove by and the car caught on fire.
When the FD showed up, they recognized the young man as having been caught lighting leaves on fire in the past, and the chief told the crew to just let it burn - and they did, all the way to the ground.
I dare anyone to bend a 2 1/2” fire hose under pressure.
“Over or under would have been too tight of a radius for the hose I’m thinking”
Probably so. If they had too tight of a radius, when they pressurized it, The Kinks in the hose likely would have restricted flow.
BS. This was pure spite. It obviously would have been faster and easier to pass the hose over the hood in front of the windshield.
(And actually kinks are more likely running the hose over a window opening.)
ML/NJ
You’re righters can not get passed the first sentence without a grammer air.
Whether out of spite or necessity.......
OUTSTANDING!!!
While I was being semi-sarcastic, the hose is coming off the hydrant at an angle—the other hook up was likely unusable. Most likely you are right.
