Prediction: NASA Will Not Find Life on Mars
February 17, 2021 | David F. Coppedge
The Perseverance rover is scheduled to land today. As usual, the search for life is a priority for the mission.
Our prediction that no life will be found on Mars is based on history, probability, the harshness of the Mars environment and the complexity of a minimal cell. We should qualify the prediction by stipulating that if any sign of life is found, it will turn out to be remnants of Earth life that somehow got transported to Mars, perhaps by a glancing meteorite.
We can also add another prediction: a null finding will not stop NASA from looking for life on Mars. It’s impossible to prove a universal negative, for one thing. And NASA knows that the L word life is a sexy term to maintain public interest in Mars missions. NASA will keep at it even if a sample return mission brings back a sterile sample of Martian soil, because even then they could claim they looked in the wrong place.

Life existed on Mars long ago.
Something planet-killing happened.
It’s on America’s tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
There’s a greater likelihood of finding life on mars than that I will ever not laugh at these nutters
Guaranteed!
Anybody who believes that the first cell developed from some mucky pond scum and lightning is proof that he has no idea of how complex a single cell is.
I certainly can’t find intelligent life at the Creation Institute.
I was looking forward to Congress being vaporized.
We should be exploring Klendathu.
hank johnson sent out a memorandum asking nasa to land on the right side of the planet, to the planet does not tip over.
There goes the neighborhood!
At this point we have no idea how common or rare life is in the universe. We will have no idea unless or until we either find some somewhere else or figure out how to create it from scratch in a laboratory.
Complex organic molecules are common. All you need is carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur and mix them for a few million years in a high pressure environment with a heat source.
How to make the jump from the most complex organic molecule to the simplest living organism is what no one has figured out yet.
Predictions are cheap when not called on it.
I find modern “creationists” embarrassing, as they have a vested interest in a tightly held view grounded in a few pages of literary context written millennia ago for the limited understanding of goat herders, and fiercely hold to their interpretation without the humility proscribed by Scripture.
The chronic “you morons” rhetoric is sinful. God created however He chose to, and we’re not privy to the details but for what we can deduce from reality - which must ultimately be consistent, whichever perspective must be adjusted accordingly. Berating those who seek to understand what is, seeking to impose a preferred truth, is not a search for truth.
Nutty anti-evolution website.
Life will be found but the argument will be ‘is it native to Mars or contamination from the Chinese Wuhan probe’.
Discovering new species here is fascinating. How much more so finding them on another planet!
Ralph Kramden's wife was Alice. Edith was Archie Bunker's wife.
According to Ralph, Alice was going to be sent straight to the moon. The show was silent as to whether she proceeeded to Mars after that, but it doesn't look good:
Past life is a possibility.
Actually an earlier mission (Opportunity - Spirit 2004) already found a fossil, but they used the grinder to grind it off - fossil was something like a Sea Anemone - a crinoid
It’s not mutually exclusive. They look at all kinds of stuff. Once you start looking at things on the microscopic level you’re open many finds. But life is the sexy one the press gravitates to. So yes, it does sell.
