Prediction: NASA Will Not Find Life on Mars
February 17, 2021 | David F. Coppedge
The Perseverance rover is scheduled to land today. As usual, the search for life is a priority for the mission.
Our prediction that no life will be found on Mars is based on history, probability, the harshness of the Mars environment and the complexity of a minimal cell. We should qualify the prediction by stipulating that if any sign of life is found, it will turn out to be remnants of Earth life that somehow got transported to Mars, perhaps by a glancing meteorite.
We can also add another prediction: a null finding will not stop NASA from looking for life on Mars. It’s impossible to prove a universal negative, for one thing. And NASA knows that the L word life is a sexy term to maintain public interest in Mars missions. NASA will keep at it even if a sample return mission brings back a sterile sample of Martian soil, because even then they could claim they looked in the wrong place.

Maybe Manbearpig.
I’ll be amazed if the darn thing works.
This isn’t your father’s NASA.
Nice graphic. I hope the landing goes well.
You wont find life in DC either. Stop sending money there
So we won’t need the Slim Whitman?
Brian Willams will be doing the live remote from the surface of mars
Oh, I do, too.
Mars missions should be for colonization, not for non-existent ecology.
Prediction....
I heard all the online news sources from the Martians agree. “They won’t find us say Amazonis Planitia cabinet members. No one leaves the underground cities for now, though.”
I bet my mind wasn’t the only one that immediately went to the Bowie song. :P
What would be funny is that if they find some clump of cells on Mars they would say there is life on mars, but a few cells in a womb and that is not life.
There should be visible remains of the torn wreckage of the ecolab left there by Matt Damon.
“Mars missions should be for colonization, not for non-existent ecology.”
Both. However we are a long way from any sort of colonization.
The search for life elsewhere is an important mission of NASA and science in general and will continue.
If they do not find life then no one can claim there are endangered species to screw things up.
“What would be funny is that if they find some clump of cells on Mars they would say there is life on mars, but a few cells in a womb and that is not life.”
How about a dog turd.
I think they did find remains of Ralph Kramden’s wife Edith on the moon.
Maybe Manbearpig.
Perhaps turducken?
