Oh boy, another wind advisory. We might have one, too, before the day’s out. I know we’ll have stout winds ahead of the cold front but at this point, they haven’t issued an advisory.
Good luck! I hope you don’t lose power.
Thank you. Yes, Kearny was a nice place in the fifties and sixties when I was a kid. Grew up in a large, rambling old Victorian house that over time my dad altered a lot.
It had a large wrap around porch, a wood burning stove in the kitchen, lots of stained glass windows, hardwood floors etc. He tore all that out.
It was the sixties and every thing was supposed to be ‘’modern’’.
At one time on Midland Ave. there was St. Stephens School which I attended for a time. Back in the days of the nuns in the ‘’penguin’’ suits but the school closed it’s door a long time ago.
The town itself was named after it’s most famous local son Union General Phil Kearny who, unfortunately , was killed at the Battle of Chantilly, Sept.1, 1862.
Howdy, luvie.
Windy here, too, and it’ll get worse as the front gets closer tonight. No snow predicted but we hope to get some decent rain out of the deal. Not exactly holding our breath though.

That should have been criminal! LOL! Ok, the wood burning stove taken out, not so bad. But the rest .... egads!
When I was young, I wanted to live in an old house like that. Had a friend who did and loved visiting her.
I went to the Catholic school in my little hometown in the late '50s and early '60s and well remember the nuns in the "penguin" suits. It was such a shock when we first saw the nuns walking around town in the new, more modern habits.
That school closed it's doors just a few years ago. A shame because it was a good school.
I miss those days in many ways.
It didn’t stir up any dust, but the kitties and I didn’t like it at all. It did keep the weather a bit cooler than yesterday which is a good thing. 80s in February is NOT normal.
Hope you get rain and not snow. Rain would be very welcome. Here too. :)
Where did you grow up?
A small town called Tullahoma, TN, close to where I am now.
Not nearly as pretty a town as Kearny. And it stinks that a lot of the old houses close to downtown that were in good shape and attractive have been torn down over the years so someone could slap up a new building for business.
It doesn’t look at all like it did when I was growing up. I left for several years and was shocked when I moved back.
Changes to any small towns can be hard. It’s sad when fine old homes are torn down to make way for ‘’progress’’. At the time my parents bought the home I grew up in on Chestnut St. in Kearny the neighborhood was in transition.
There were two larger Victorian homes next to ours but the people who owned them were elderly and unable to keep them up. One couple passed on pretty close to each other and the other couple sold their home and moved away.
A local builder bought them both, tore them down and put up a couple of two family ugly looking ‘’modern’’ houses.
How did you happen to come to Kearny?
It does hurt to see many of the changes made in the name of “progress”. It happens in larger cities too. I lived in Raleigh, NC for several years and it was a wonderful city when I move there in ‘79. By the time I left in ‘93, I never wanted to see the place again. It was destroyed by “progress”.
I’ve never been to Kearny. I did have “trip” in quotation marks last night. My trip was via Google Maps. It’s the only way I get to travel nowadays due to being a prisoner to 32 cats. LOL
I “drive” around using street view to explore places. That’s how I saw and got the screen capture of the statue last night and how I saw a lot of the houses in the area.
Fr. John P. Washington was from northern NJ, God bless them all..and our veterans..
