Lawmakers in at least eight states are pushing legislation this year that would require high-school seniors to complete federal or state financial-aid applications before they can graduate, part of a broad effort to guide more high-school students toward college.
Supporters say the mandates would bring postsecondary education within reach for millions more young adults by helping them claim billions of dollars in grants for which they are already eligible, and ultimately help improve the economy by creating a more educated workforce. They also hope that requiring the forms—or even compelling students who want exemptions to meet with guidance counselors—would provide an opening for discussions about college plans. Opponents argue the requirements are unnecessarily burdensome.
Nationally, 55.6% of last year’s high-school seniors completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, a form long criticized as overly complicated that unlocks access to federal grants and loans and is often required for state and institutional aid as well. Aid experts say students who most need the assistance are least likely to apply for it.
Bills in more than a dozen states pushing Fafsa completion—sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats—stalled last year when lawmakers’ attention turned to the coronavirus pandemic, or because of other objections. Now, legislatures in Michigan, New York, Hawaii, Indiana and elsewhere are taking up the issue again. Oklahoma lawmakers are also expected to consider establishing a task force to study the possibility of instituting a mandate. California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom included the requirement in his proposed 2021-22 budget.

Or maybe they want to have all their names for the draft for the next war that the Democrats start.
No
Part of the definition of a totalitarian state is that anything that is not forbidden is compulsory.
“ sponsored by both Republicans and Democrats”
And there ya have it. Ugh.
It’s possible that some people are too dumb for college. How many understaffed coffee shops are there?
More students certainly do not need to be taking on more debt, along with their parents, for any degree that doesn’t have a high correlation to being hired at a salary that allows the debt to be repaid. Any degree with the word “studies” in it automatically fails this test. I know I certainly made that error with both of my kids and was fortunate to clear my portion of the debt some time ago.
I strongly encourage most parents to send their students to a local community college first to ensure they are capable of the work and discipline at the college level. There are too many distractions at the typical 4-year institution for most students. Parents should be quick to recognize if their child is not ready or would better benefit from entering a technical or trade school. The really bright ones will rise in the trade and seek independent opportunities such as owning a trade contracting business.
Even entering a STEM career field is no guarantee with the prevalence of H1B and outside contracting overseas for technical services.
Debt slavery will now be mandatory. The banksters must be so happy.
“Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)”
THE form to fill out for financial aid.
So states are requiring a student to fill out a FEDERAL form in order to graduate.
China Joe & The Ho are all for that, I’m sure.
I taught engineering and technology education for 30 years. We need fewer students going to college and mor to trade school.
In other words, parents will be mandated to make financial disclosures or their children will be denied a HS diploma. I wonder if GED’s will also require it.
This is about indoctrination, not education. Brains don’t matter.
Excellent quote
There, fixed it.
As someone else noted, another way to get names for a demonrat/uniparty draft, to fill vacancies created by their never ending wars.
What a Milestone in a Proles Life!
To Graduate from Public "School" to Serfdom and Debt Slavery!!
Or maybe that's Millstone ...
You beat me to it. More indoctrinated socialist dingbats. By mandate, no less.
North Venezuela is what we are now.
One of the things that I thank my Dad to this day for is that even though all six of his kids graduated from college (and five of the six with graduate degrees, two of those five with professional degress), he insisted that each of us also learn a trade.
This accomplished two things:
Amen to that! You’d probably have loved my Dad. See post #17.
They are afraid the offspring of some despicables might escape being student loan debt slaves.
Oh, egad!
