Vice President Mike Pence on Wednesday said that he doesn’t believe he has the “unilateral authority” to decide between competing slates of electors.
“It is my considered judgment that my oath to support and defend the Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,” Pence said in a statement released just before a joint session of Congress began.
As president of the Senate, Pence is presiding over the session. The purpose of the session is to count electoral votes.
Under the Electoral College system, voters choose electors. Those electors then vote, almost always for the candidate that received the most ballots in their state. Congress meets in the January after an election to tally the votes.
Typically a rote affair, this session has taken on heightened significance after seven states sent two certificates to Washington, one for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and one for President Donald Trump. Biden won the states but Trump has said he was cheated.
Trump and some Republicans argue that Pence has the “exclusive authority” to reject electoral votes for Biden and choose the ones for Trump. A lawsuit asking a court to support that view was rejected by a district judge. An appeal was dismissed, though the plaintiffs earlier Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to intervene.
Just as it constrained biden from rejecting Trump votes in 2016 and installing hillary.
… nothing about his CONSTITUTIONAL duties ….
PING!
This guy folded like a cheap suit when the whole gay pizza wedding thing happened.
This is no shock.
But the people are speaking in the capitol.
And loudly.
Oh what a shocker!
Raise your hand if you ever thought Pence would do the right thing.
These people seek the perks and power of public office. But when it gets hot on the field they just punt and go hide.
He is right, of course.
sad. but no surprise for me.
I don’t see the part of the constitution requiring anyone to accept fraud.
So Pence thinks the role to count the votes is purely ceremonial. Because the Constitution has in so many other places spent lots of language describing all kinds of other ceremonial situations, or, does he believe the founders wrote such an inspired document and decided to just throw in a meaningless ceremonial task in what is an amazingly short document?
Venezuela used to be a free country.
A socialist promised to give “free money” to some of the voters.
Now, they are eating cats in Venezuela.
It happened there.
It can happen here.
Well the Constitution sure didn’t constrain the communist operatives in the contested states from conducting blatantly illegal, unconstitutional election fraud, now did it?
Law and order doesn’t work when only one side is trying to play by the rules.
The country needs a cold reboot, with the OS wiped and restored from the original image (the Constitution).
“the plaintiffs earlier Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to intervene.’
They’ll fix it, right?
Pence is a EUNUCH. First sign of conflict, he turned tail and ran. I spit on him.
He is correct in a sense, he could easily hear the objections, then decide there is too much Controversy to be decided by the Chair, and Send it to the House to Vote.
Muh Consachooshun! Yeah, I’m pretty sure the rigged election threw the rules out the window.
