WINONA, Texas — One person is dead and three more, including the suspect, were injured following a shooting at an East Texas church Sunday morning. According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, the shooting took place at Starrville Methodist Church, located on Farm-to-Market Road 16 in Winona. The SCSO says the suspect had been hiding in the church's bathroom following a car chase with authorities Saturday night.
The SCSO says the suspect was in a dark Volkswagen Beetle and had a shotgun pointed out the window, but later left the car due to a tire blowout and ran away. Sheriff Smith believes the suspect took shelter in the church sometime between 10:30 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. Early Sunday morning, the church's pastor opened a stall in the bathroom and found the suspect, the SCSO said. According to Sheriff Larry Smith, the pastor was armed, pointed a gun at the suspect and asked him to leave. However, Sheriff Smith says the suspect disarmed the pastor, shot and killed him.
The SCSO says the suspect then stole the pastor's car. The Harrison County Sheriff's Office says the SCSO attempted to stop the vehicle in Smith County, but the driver took off east on Interstate 20. The driver, a 21-year-old Black man, continued driving reaching speeds as high as 120 miles per hour on I-20, according to the HCSO.

Not far from me.
RIP preacher.
Sad news for such a pretty day today.
Another story about the shooting:
Well, when he opened the john stall, he should have backed off and probably was too close and the guy grabbed at the gun hand before the pastor knew what was going on. He was just not prepared for combat. THAT is what it is with these criminals, combat!! Back off, prepare to shoot. Don’t get closer.
Precisely. You must have resolved that question in your own head before carrying and pulling a weapon. This is one of the key themes in Massad Ayoob’s In the Gravest Extreme, a book I recommend to everyone thinking about carrying a weapon.
[Preacher didn’t have the will to shoot. Sad.]
Is Black the name of a nearby town? No?
How about we start requiring the race of the perp be printed in ALL CAPS and see how long it takes some folks to catch on?
In before the Tuco quote...
Because some are “more equal than others”. /s
No doubt the pastor hesitated to shoot. His murderer will be released back into the public in hardly no time.
That is a very sad, crazy story. The whole suspect situation was totally avoidable if they could have tracked him down with a police dog to the church or wherever he was hiding, for how long? Why wasn’t the church notified about the incident from the previous night and that the suspect was still at large? And that it was his car in the parking lot?
I was happy to hear that the pastor was packing, but sad that he was either totally taken by surprise or that he was unwilling to use his firearm.
The only bright spots in this story is :
1. That more were not harmed/died.
2. That we all know where the pastor is right now.
3. That the suspect is now has another chance to turn his life over to Jesus.
Me either.
Amen. Maybe that was the reason he chose not to shoot.
Fixed it!
You hesitate, you die.
If you don’t have the will to pull the trigger, you shouldn’t even bother owning a gun.
This preacher might still be alive had he not brought a gun he was unprepared to use into the situation.
How do you know that?
He had the drop on the man. How did he know that he was supposed to just kill him?
This was a black-on-black incident. Cause of death will be covid.
Dang
21 foot rule at a minimum
Poor pastor
Just dang
