Rand Paul blocks federal Daniel’s Law
NJ Globe ^ | Dec 16 | By Nikita Biryukov

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) blocked a bill that would prevent data brokers from selling or otherwise trading in the personal identifying information of federal judges spurred by the attempted assassination of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas.

Rand sought to amend the bill — dubbed Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act after Salas’s son, who was slain during the attack — to include similar protections for members of Congress. Mark Anderl, Salas’s husband, was wounded in the attack but has since recovered.

“I really think that this is important that we protect addresses for our judges, but it’s also important that we do this for our elected officials,” he said, citing the attempted assassinations of Reps. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) in 2011 and Steve Scalise (R-La.) in 2017.

The Republican’s amendment included other provisions that U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-North Bergen), the bill’s prime sponsor in the chamber, said were a poison pill.

The New Jersey lawmaker worried about barriers to legal action judges can take against data providers who refuse to take down or stop selling their information.

Paul suggested the other concerns — those not related to protections for members of Congress — could be worked out.

“We are willing to compromise with the senator from New Jersey. We are willing to work with him on getting the bill passed,” he said. “The only thing that we would like to do is have it include Congress as well. The other points you mentioned that you object to as far as changing, I’d be willing to discuss, and I think there would be a middle ground.”

Sorry, this is where we part ways. I think not only should everything be Public, they should not be afforded any special rights or special protection. They can Live and Die under the SAME LAWS as the Citizenry.

NO SPECIAL RIGHTS FOR ANYONE

Why not just give every citizen the same digital rights? Geez, the entire EU, Africa, and India have better digital rights for the average citizen than we have here in the US.

Neither of those attacks took place at a congressman's house. And Rand's attack was by a neighbor so amending this bill wouldn't have prevented that.

Exactly. Just another tier in the justice system and the development of a royalty class.

Exactly why politicians can enact the myriad of extra-constitutional laws and regulations we see today.

We’re at a point where politicians should rightly fear making unethical and unconstitutional decisions.

This is going to be a further instrument of our oppression. This basically lets judges become secret judges. It will be illegal to even post a photo of them. They need to be fully accessible and accountable to the community, not lording over us from secret hideaways.
And sure as hell congress needs to be wide open.

Gov shouldn’t be creating special protections for different Americans.

But there's money to be made and votes to be garnered in an everlasting pursuit for power and wealth.

Ii vote no, because in the case where a government protects bad activist judges, and do not remove them, then it is the duty of John Q Public to do so.

Why would I care about judges and politicians ? 90% are hacks who directly or indirectly make my life worse. They don’t deserve special protection because they tricked some people into a cushy job. We shouldn’t be In the business of giving special protections to certain Americans but let everyone else fend for themselves.

This bill protects the powerful. They think they can do whatever they want and not have any consequences for their actions.

People should not fear the government.
Government should fear the people.

No special protection. These people should be vulnerable so that they don’t forget that they are servants and not masters.

These were at Publicly Scheduled events. Not at their homes.

Also, if My address & other information is available at the public level & I am subject to the consequences of any public utterances on social media or just through attendance at the wrong political gathering like a Trump rally, why should my information not be protected like those of my citizen representatives?

This is all more plutocrat, elitist nonsense. Judges, senators, congressmen & should feel the same threat as the plebes! They need to be less insulated from reality, not more.

Best thing he could do is amend the bill to prevent the selling or any other electronic transfer of any citizen’s personal data by anyone for any reason. Would destroy Facebook, google, and a host of wannabes.

Amen, bro. Preach!

We don’t need overlords. The political class is already way too insulated.
