Billionaire Ray Dalio Eyes Class Struggle as He Ponders US Tipping Point: "This Situation Could Lead To a Revolution or Civil War"

Ray Dalio turned to class and power struggles in the latest installment of his ongoing series on the changing world order, wondering if the U.S. is at a tipping point that could move it from what he says is “manageable” tension to a full-blown revolution.

“People and politicians are now at each other’s throats to a degree greater than at any time in my 71 years,” Dalio wrote in the essay published on LinkedIn, noting that disorder is rising in a number of countries. “How the U.S. handles its disorder will have profound implications for Americans, others around the world, and most economies and markets.”

The billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates encouraged his readers to think about class issues that can become inflamed during stressful periods, as the struggle over wealth and power tends to be the “biggest thing affecting most people in most countries through time.”

“One timeless and universal truth that I saw went back as far as I studied history, since before Confucius around 500 BC, is that those societies that draw on the widest range of people and give them responsibilities based on their merits rather than privileges are the most sustainably successful because they find the best talent to do their jobs well, they have diversity of perspectives, and they are perceived as the most fair, which fosters social stability,” Dalio wrote.

Key Quotes

* “How people are with each other is the primary driver of the outcomes they get.”

* “The United States is at a tipping point in which it could go from manageable internal tension to revolution and/or civil war.”

What China is doing makes perfect sense in the context of the big economic cycle described by Ray Dalio. In his latest essay published Tuesday, Bridgewater’s founder showed that China is in the midst of a debt bubble and the beginning of widening wealth gap. Apparently, China wants to tackle both before it’s too late.

In contrast, the U.S. has passed the peak of its economic power, settling into the stage of money printing after the burst of the debt bubble, according to Dalio.

"It is in this stage when there are bad financial conditions and intensifying conflict,” wrote Dalio. “Classically this stage comes after periods of great excesses in spending and debt and the widening of wealth and political gaps and before there are revolutions and civil wars. United States is at a tipping point in which it could go from manageable internal tension to revolution and/or civil war."

That’s a dire warning. Apparently, President Xi Jinping is trying to avoid the same path. But we Americans, collectively seem to be unaware of what's going on.

If the rigged election stands, they will have broken the social contract.

No rule of law works both ways.

Do the billionaires need us to be slaves?

Will Twitter fall apart if our elections are fair?

Will Facebook crash if the American people are allowed the freedom to choose the leaders of our government?

It has nothing to do with ‘class’ and everything to do with Patriots versus Communists.

Yep. I read that whole thing and was trying to boil down to an essence, and you said it.

THEY have openly broken the social contract and rule of law by the Constitution.

Not US. THEM.

It has everything to do with class.

Look at Trump’s troubles. He is rich, but he is NOT part of noble class. That is why he was fought every step of the way by the elite.

The problem is there are more people with money and ability than their are openings in the noble class. That makes things rather unsettled.

Below the upper class there is the worker class. Most of us here are in that place. We produce goods and services, but ultimately work for the noble classes. Every seen a CEO and wonder “WTF is that guy doing?” Then he flames out, and shows up leading another company? That guy is part of the upper class.

Where to?

If the USA falls, the rest of the free world goes with it.

Patriotism is only found in the working class. To be patriotic is considered gauche by the elite, so class does matter.

I don’t think the good ole USA is anywhere close to Revolution or Civil War.

We have a Country of about 332 million. There are about 225 million eligible voters in the Country. The 2020 election saw the highest voter turnout in more than a century at 67%. Basically one third of everyone eligible voted for Trump, on third voted against Trump and one third didn’t bother. There are just to many people who don’t care or are comfortable with the way things are for civil war or revolution to play out...if you’re not going to vote you aren’t going to fight a civil conflict.

If and when one side or the other motivates that one third then things might change but until then we will be in gridlock both legislatively and socially for the foreseeable future.

The real question IMO is how the 100+ million that are to young to vote will break in the future....

“It has nothing to do with ‘class’ and everything to do with Patriots versus Communists.”

That’s how I see it. The kids I know are very enamored by the business guru Harvard ray dallio. Yawn.

Class struggle. I just don’t see it.

Are we going with what the founding fathers laid out for us? Or not?

If we do, and with another business guruTrump (Wharton), well be in very good shape. All classes.
