For some inexplicable reason, conservatives rush towards fratricide with the same kind of urgency that drives lemmings over the cliff. It’s what they do, even when it’s counterproductive and costly.
Conservatism wasn’t made better off by the four-year campaign waged against Speaker Newt Gingrich by some House conservatives who considered him ideologically unreliable. It wasn’t helped by John Boehner’s premature departure from Congress, brought about by political headaches caused by House Republicans on his right flank.
A small group of so-called purists on the right even crossed swords with President Ronald Reagan, without whom modern conservatism would have emerged stillborn after the Barry Goldwater’s 1964 thumping at Lyndon Johnson’s hands. Yes, the purists even scourged Reagan, who launched a revolution the left is still trying to roll back.
In the light of what appears to be President Trump’s defeat in his re-election bid, conservatives are now turning on Fox News, a channel where I once appeared with some frequency back in the 1990s, over its supposed ideological apostasy.
What nonsense. Fox was never an explicitly conservative organization, but, as conceived by Rupert Murdoch and brought to life by Roger Ailes, it was successfully positioned as the counterpunch to the overtly liberal networks that dominated the media: CBS, ABC, NBC and CNN.
It was a necessary addition to the nation’s information stream. The opinion side of the network leans heavily to the right, but the news-gathering operation plays it mostly down the middle, remembering the need for balance, because every story has at least two sides.
As a programming strategy, it works. The network is a financial and ratings juggernaut embraced by conservatives, because Fox News gave their agenda and personalities a fair hearing.

Not to say that I’ll never again tune into Levin or Gutfeld or Tucker or Hannity or Laura. I don’t have to agree with them 100% of the time to watch occasionally and see what they have to say. BUT it’ll be a cold day in hell before I forgive Fox News for their election night propaganda show, in which they operated as PR flacks for the Biden campaign, especially their giving that “Decision Desk” guy (an Obama donor for crying out loud) free rein to make all sorts of asinine, incorrect “calls.”
yeah did he write this while on the toilet?
He should have flushed it.
Conservatives did like Newt.
Idiot.
I haven’t watched fox in 7 years. Too much arguing and yelling.
Now I just want it to die.
I don’t know who forced or paid fox to do what it did on election night (tried to watch first time in 7 years and 4 different times i shut it off) but I am loving watching it burn
If Biden gets in, there was no defeat, it was stolen. Trump won.
That's not what their viewer drop suggests.
I’ve never even heard of Peter Roff.
Frankly, I WISH it were still that way. Under Rupert and Ailes, that channel was great. But it has deteriorated, and, apparently, tipped over under Murdoch’s sons.
No fratricide here when the channel appears to be eschewing Trump supporters altogether by insisting this election is clean.
Bugger Roff
Welcome to Maryland, featuring Governor "Lockdown Larry" Hogan.
Thank you, happy holidays and keep your channel tuned to Faux!
I’ve had some doozies on Twitter but have never had a tweet flagged until I made a very mild of criticism of Fox.
Algorithm playing up? Fox figures being paranoid? Or part of a larger war?
Friggin’ flake
Yep. The Swamp RINOs hated Reagan but had to accept him. thats why they saddled him with RINO Bush number 1. It appeased the spineless branch of the party.
I'd guess all three. By us turning them out, we've hurt the flow of propaganda and now it's time to sprinkle some money around in an attempt to marginalize us.

And now it’s not, so...
The Soviet Union.
Reaganism was gone by the second year of Clinton. We elected the Contract with America Republicans, the Bush TSA Administration, and the Tea Party bunch since then. They aren’t worth a damn. They just let the bad guys steal the presidency and celebrate a few Republican puppies and kittens winning meaningless seats.
The Democrats can steal any election they want at any time. They could run the country with judges and bureaucrats if the GOP won every seat. Reagan in 1984 was probably the last honest election. No way the Democrats would have let Jesse Helms beat Jim Hunt.
Famous last words of the Whigs
They gave Reagan a choice between Bush and Ford. Ford wanted to be co-president, was hated by conservatives, and wanted to bring back Kissinger. Reagan chose Bush. No good option.
They are supposedly stifling the opinion side too, so the article is nonsense.
