Angela Li and Vivrd Prasanna have achieved the pinnacle of a public university education she a senior at UCLA, he a freshman at UC Berkeley. Both are children of immigrants, with Lis parents from China and Prasannas from India.
*** But when it comes to Proposition 16, the Tuesday ballot measure that would once again allow affirmative action in public education, contracting and hiring, the two UC students and their families sharply diverge.
*** Their diverse views reflect the complexity of the affirmative action issue among Asian Americans, who represent more than 50 ethnic subgroups with varying politics, histories in the United States and levels of income, education and English language ability. Those differences play out in their views of Proposition 16 and concerns about their place at the University of California
*** Some Asian Americans try to divine the future by looking to private California colleges, which were not bound by Proposition 209s ban on affirmative action at public campuses. They are not encouraged: the top privates enroll smaller proportions of Asian American undergraduates than the 33.5% at UC campuses, including 23% at Stanford University, 21% at USC and 16.3% at Pomona College.
*** thnic Chinese who make up a maximum of 38% of Asian American students admitted by UC, by far the largest subgroup opposed the measure, 37% to 30%. Among ethnic Philippine, Vietnamese, Japanese and Korean voters, support was greater than opposition but topped out at 38% with large numbers undecided at the time.
Voters of Indian descent were by far the most supportive of the affirmative action ballot measure, 58% vs. 17%. The strong support among Indian Americans is all the more striking because their share among Asian American California freshmen has surged from 7.8% in 1996 to 17.4% in 2019.

Affirmative action IS systemic racism.
Asians voters are not stupid ...
Koreans voted 14 percent for Trump
The overall Asian vote was about 22 percent for Trump.
So yeah, it sucks but Asian voters do seem to be, at the least, naïve or ignorant about what dems stand for, at least the vast majority.
BTW, why is it a crime to say that on this board?
I’ve noticed that.
Just because they’re hard working and well read and good people doesn’t mean they’re not completely misinformed and utterly deluded when it comes to voting for a D or an R.
ciao
Again, not all. The vast majority.
They actually have affirmative action for Dalits in India - maybe they’re used to it?
This is all about shutting Asians out of higher education in California. Racist to the core.
There essentially was an uprising in SF’s Chinatown when leftist Democrats tried to do this in the Legislature a couple of years ago. After protests the Democrats pulled the legislation. But now it’s back. I think you’ll find a lot of folks in S.F. voting Republican now, even if they won’t admit it publicly.
Democrats so love systemic racism, race riots and anything that keeps Blacks underpaid and in poverty
Yes it is, and as far as I can remember, it's the ONLY systemic racism that's legal in our government, but I'm open to correction.
As Chinese American I oppose AA, of course. But have done a lot of thinking on this issue. Morality may vary with race. Asian people is meri oriented. Thats why they never question why nba does not have a lot of Asians. Because of this they have real hard time to understand the AA. My two cent is this: we live in race mixed society. Its impossible to have common morality. Blacks feel entitled to college degree, because their morality is oriented that way.
When you pour milk into coffee, without stirring, it will gradually blend in naturally.
(From 2014)
[snip] More than 500 Chinese-Americans angrily protested recently in the rain, outside the offices of California State Assembly member Ed Chau. They were upset about a new effort to repeal Californias ban on affirmative action in university admissions.
The irony is that if ANY races in California can point to outright racism against them it is Chinese and Japanese.
For Chinese, the Exclusionary Laws (including it being illegal to own land in California), and for Japanese, internment laws spearheaded by California’s then governor, Earl Warren.
My family still has California land that has language in the deed prohibiting any “Oriental or other non-Caucasian” from owning it. My Dad was white and inherited it through his family, but technically my mom, me, my wife, and my kids are all barred from owning it. (These restrictions were eventually struck down by lawsuits and legislation).
Indians and Communist Chinese vote reliably Democrat. Taiwanese and Vietnamese, Republican. Fil-ams, mostly Republican. Dont know about the rest.
Among recent immigrants there is almost no understanding of the fundamentals, tenants and ethos of the United States as founded. Most arrive with their concepts of governance from the ‘old country’. The same extends to many if not most of their first generation offspring and many if not most native Americans because of the intentional elimination of Civics and US History in our Leftist educational systems.
I'm sooooo looking forward to Election Day.
