American Shoppers Panic-Buying As Coronavirus Spike Aggravates Year Of Upheaval

Americans buying guns alongside their toilet paper and canned goods in anticipation of Nov. 3

With just four days until the 2020 presidential election, early indicators show American shoppers concerned about political fallout, a spike in coronavirus cases and the possibility of more lockdowns are stockpiling goods.

As tensions run high, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, and other basic goods are reportedly flying off store shelves once more in anticipation of a night of civil unrest next Tuesday.

Approaching the close of a chaotic year, in which social and racial justice protesters have frequently clashed with federal law enforcement, uncertainty has served as a catalyst, USA Today reported earlier this week.

Mothers are buying guns and ammunition in record numbers alongside their canned goods, in preparation for unprecedented election-related violence.

In June, gun dealers ran more than 3.9 million background checks on purchasers through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, according to FBI data. It was the highest number ever recorded in a single month.

Over the first nine months of 2020, gun sellers had conducted more checks than they had in all of 2019.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that the nation is on track to stockpile firearms at record rates, buying 15.1 million guns in the seven months this year from March through September.

Hoping to "bug out," residents in large cities allegedly plan to flee their apartments -- perhaps for the second time this year -- for homes in more remote locations.

Bottled water is cheap and gives one a sense of “preparation” I suppose. Even if it isn’t really needed. OTOH, if this was a REAL terrible pandemic and even essential workers were afraid to go to work, or were sick, or dead, or at home taking care of sick people.... then having some water on hand isn’t a bad idea.

I have several camping water filters in case of earthquakes. Or whatever.

My four rolls of toilet paper should be good for a month or so.

I trust you're not a nail-biter.

Wish I had back the 400 rounds I burned up early this spring before the c-virus began. Oh well, I can still use it as a club and thrusting spear while yelling “Bang! Bang!”

They report on “panic buying” in order to spur panic buying.

"But seriously, I’m concerned about THAT aspect of us all being locked in cages FOR TEN MONTHS NOW!"

Yes, I've wondered what effect all the 'sanitizing' we've been doing is having on our normal viruses, bacteria & etc.

I'm not sure why people buy bottled water at times like this.

These are the same types that drive alone in a moving car, with the windows up, the AC on and are still wearing their masks.

That appears to be the press’ job these days.

If you’re in an area dependent on city water, and it goes down, or becomes polluted because the system has gone down, you need to have bottled water. Also, if you want to flee, you need a couple of flats of water in your trunk...

I was surprised to find some ammo at Walmart last week. But they have probably removed it from their shelves by now in preparation for the riots.

Practice is important too. Means less is needed if and when the time comes.

FWIW, I was in Sam’s Club in Charlotte today. Looked like they had several pallets of toilet paper and paper towels. There were several people leaving the aisle and still in the aisle and they were all getting one of each. At that rate, unless there were more that I didn’t see the shelves will be empty by late this afternoon.

Hope the supply chain is stocked. We shall see what next week brings us.

Where we live that is the norm. Never cross the desert without water in the car.

That being said, having reserves should be the norm rather than panic mode 4.

That’s why it’s called “panic buying” not “reasonable precautions buying”.

NO FREEZERS HERE IN MEMPHIS REGION. Food prices UP, Kroger brand cheese slices in 3 weeks went from $1.69-1.99 to $2.69. Neat is DOUBLE. My freezer is 15 yr old 13 cu ft. Full mostly garden stuff, a little meat. a few odds and ends, shelves are full, but won’ last more than 3 months, we eat twice a day. Basic baking supplies. We live in a starter home.

I was even able to buy Disinfectant Wipes yesterday for the first time since February.

Me too, and what's interesting is that my wife went shopping in the same store today and they were still available.
