The New York Times on Oct. 24, 2020, published an article by tech columnist Kevin Roose about The Epoch Times. The article was published on the front page of the NY Times Sunday edition the next day.
Roose worked on this article about The Epoch Times for at least eight months. The result, however, is disappointing. Instead of attempting to give a fair portrayal of The Epoch Times as an up-and-coming media outlet, Roose resorts to factual errors, innuendo, and misrepresentations in an attempt to smear a competing media outlet.
Furthermore, previous social media comments made by Roose and New York Times media columnist Ben Smith (who contributed to Rooses article) about The Epoch Times, in which they appear to discuss a collective effort against The Epoch Times, raise questions about the intent behind this article (see the section Personal Bias below).
At the heart of the article is the NY Times apparent discontent with the fact that The Epoch Times has becomein the NY Times own wordsone of the countrys most powerful digital publishers. The article could easily have been written as a success story of a group of Chinese Americans who cherish their First Amendment rights and have succeeded in growing a large independent media outlet.
Instead, Roose relies on words such as secretive and attempts to tie us to an unrelated outlet, in order to call into question the quality of our award-winning journalism.

The Epoch Times is a Falun Gong publication. But its pretty good. One has to read any news source with caution. Particularly the New York Times.
We really enjoy it and highly recommend it
I agree. I don’t trust Falun Gong, but the Slimes has slimed the Epoch Times, as one would expect, because it publishes viewpoints the Slimes doesn’t like.
Looking forward to an Epoch Times review of the NYT.

Thats quite a challenge.
What is wrong with Falun Gong? Seems to be a form of Buddhism.
I know the CCP does not like them which is a mark in their favor.
I am signed up to receive Epoch Times daily online and have a print weekly subscription that arrives in my USPS mailbox. It’s a fair newspaper, that even has regional news in its print edition. It’s even an easy rest on the eyes for those of us who spent a lot of time online. There are also special topics besides news. The paper is a breath of fresh air in the era of so many fake, polluted news organizations. They often have specials allowing people to get a trial subscription.
The NYT is like the Leftist Moderator at a Presidential Debate.
Only those that sing solely from the Democrat hymnal are considered righteous by the NYT.
Falun Gong seems peculiar to most Americans, but the Chinese communists correctly see it as a mortal threat because it contradicts the materialism that is essential to communism.
The Epoch Times is a really good news outlet. Jan Jekeliek’s interview program American Thought Leaders is very informative. So is Zooming with Simone Gau.
This is from the same paper that ran cover for fascist AND communist genocides right? Thought so...
They sent us a free copy couple wks ago. Never had that happen before.
The NYT is upset, which means who they criticize is good.
I agree. I am a subscriber.
Next up, SURPRIZING results of Ford’s 8 month investigation into Chevrolet.
It’s simple: Epoch Times is anti-CCP, so those who are pro-CCP or are paid off by China hate it.
China hates them so much that in past it has sent thugs to bust up Epoch’s new printing press in HK and set it office on fire. The have also sent creeps to beat up their reporters in Vancouver and Atlanta.
For its part, Epoch’s subscriptions skyrockets when they became very pro-Trump.
The MSM hate them for either reason, because they are anti-CCP or because Epoch is pro-Trump.
