President Donald Trump announced Friday that Sudan will start to normalize ties with Israel, making it the third Arab state to do so as part of U.S.-brokered deals in the run-up to Election Day.
The deal, which would deepen Sudans engagement with the West, follows Trump's conditional agreement this week to remove the North African nation from the list of state sponsors of terrorism if it pays compensation to American victims of terror attacks.
It also delivers a foreign policy achievement for Trump just days before the U.S. election and boosts his embattled ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Recently, the United States brokered diplomatic pacts between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Jordan recognized Israel in the 1990s.
Trump invited reporters into the Oval Office while he was on the phone with the leaders of Israel and Sudan. Trump said Sudan had demonstrated a commitment to battling terrorism. This is one of the great days in the history of Sudan, Trump said, adding that Israel and Sudan have been in a state of war for decades.
It is a new world, Netanyahu said over the phone. We are cooperating with everyone. Building a better future for all of us.
Netanyahu has made it a priority to forge ties with formerly hostile countries in Africa and the Arab world in the absence of any progress with the Palestinians during his more than decade in office. The deal also is aimed at unifying Arab countries against their common adversary, Iran.
These recent recognitions of Israel have undermined the traditional Arab consensus that there can be no normalization with Israel before the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The Palestinians say the recognitions amount to betrayal, while Israel says the Palestinians have lost what they have seen as their veto

Trump has been masterful so far and if the Saudi’s come onboard it’d put Trump over the top - he’s done more in ME peace treaties than any president in 75 years.
I doubt next but the Saudis obviously approved of the deal. Their Gulf Allies never would have agreed if the Saudis objected and the Saudis never would have agreed for Israel and the UAE to use their airspace to establish a direct link if they did not approve.
My guess is that maybe Morocco, Tunisia and some more of the gulf states will be next (Oman was said to be close to agreeing, maybe Kuwait). Once a few more are on board, then it will be easier for the Saudis themselves to get on board. I think the Saudi royals are just laying the groundwork to publicly acknowledge what theyve already decided privately.
Yep.
I think the Saudis already have a US guarantee of full backing if attacked by Iran. By making a deal with Israel, they would formally add Israel to their list of allies against Iran. That itself is no small inducement for a deal.
How he did it:
1. All the old hardliners are dying off in these countries.
2. Most of these countries are aware that the oil wealth isn’t going to last forever.
3. Lots of the younger generation want more Western culture and products and aren’t fundamentalists.
4. Trump shows up, tosses the old ‘statesman’ tactics out the window, and points out that the hardline tack was stupid, got them nowhere and impoverishes their people. How about we all declare peace and all get (legitimately, legally) ridiculously rich instead of killing each other? This is a tack that no career diplomat in the last few centuries has tried.
They may also be in the process of quietly disappearing the old hardliners that would still disapprove publicly. That’s a thing that’s been happening in SA lately.

Not surprised. Theyll approve all their Arab allies getting on board then say that as a matter of national security......and lets face it theyve got a good argument here....they need to make a deal with Israel to defend themselves against Iran. They will portray any opposition as unpatriotic.
The Saudis do have to publicly walk a fine line, but cooperation between Mossad and Saudi intelligence is an open secret and common knowledge. It likely goes further, the parties preferring to be discreet about it.
“I dont know how he did it.”
Isn’t that the truth? All of this just popped up out of nowhere. Jared Kushner and Michael Pompeo were obviously working quietly behind the scenes for a long time making this happen. And NOTHING leaked about it at all.
What did Obama/Biden have to show for eight long years of “Mideast Peace Process”? Absolutely nothing but death and destruction.
