The coronavirus, widespread quarantines, an unprecedented self-induced recession, and unchecked rioting, looting, and protesting -- all in a presidential election year -- are radically disrupting American habits and behavior.
Rents, home prices, and office occupancy rates in major cities, especially on the two coasts, are dropping fast. Techies and young professionals have discovered that they can work from home without paying sky-high housing costs in order to be close to the office.
Those more fortunate wonder why they should get bogged down with commutes and urban traffic -- or navigate city sidewalks amid homelessness, crime, racial tensions, and urban unrest -- when they can make as much money while staying distant in quieter landscapes.
Some react by moving to quieter, low-tax states such as Idaho, Tennessee, or Utah. Others flee New York City or the Bay Area/Silicon Valley corridor to upstate New York or California's Central Valley. Who would have ever believed that housing prices in picturesque San Francisco would be falling while housing prices in pedestrian Sacramento and Fresno are soaring?
During the recent urban renaissance, young people had flocked to cities to be where the action was. Now, do they want to deactivate and find some independence and peace from the relentless chaos?
Worries about COVID-19 in high-density cities, and unreliable city services add to the unhappiness. Residents want less dependence on mass transit and elevator living. Constant human contact is seen more as risky than desirous.

Will Changes to American Life Become Permanent?
And the economy is “permanently” shrunk. Consumerism will take a hit for the long term. Not a huge hit, but a hit.
Movie theaters may be gone for good in the same way that drive-in theaters are gone. That is, not completely, but more as a novelty.
Etc.
And after the election this question may be moot anyway.
I believe this upheaval will have permanent results.
Many societal institutions are now broken terribly — restaurants, movie theaters, cruises, concerts, festivals, sports arenas, etc.
The standard work-at-the-office model is broken, as noted in the article. As is classroom teaching.
Societal interaction has been stymied — kids not playing with others, office interactions (and romances), fun large crowd events (like county fairs).
Our society is being further dismantled, as cultural Marxists desire and require.
The contagion may accelerate change that was coming down the pike anyway. Think the internet of all things.
Just think... All this chaos for an illness with a 99.5% survivor rate.
Insanity is what we have.
Th ere is considerable fear that our church will never be the same. Among the elderly, once the habit is broken, Sunday mornings will be different.
We’ll see
there is considerable fear
The government NEVER relinquishes power, and now the bureaucrats have found out that declaring an emergency essentially gives them limitless power to micromanage peoples lives. Expect crime involving firearms, racism and the climate crisis to be declared public emergencies. The separation of powers is all that can save us but only if judges arent agenda driven and can see through the abuse of power. I am not going to hold my breath.
Why automatically assume that these changes will be BAD?? Having grown up rural and spent much of my life in semi-rural areas, I can’t see de-urbanization and “internetization” having other than long-term GOOD effects. Most of our societal problems today are the result of mega-cities.
So Democrats will spread to red areas and everything will end up blue or purple. It is better to not dilute Republican areas.

We disagree. I think the exact opposite is likely.
They want it to be permanent, because it has meant the total destruction and suppression of the private sphere. We are no longer allowed to go to church, to engage in recreation and amateur sports, no longer allowed to pursue careers and no longer even to gather in family groups.
The government loves this. All activities, thoughts and actions shall belong to the state, and can be prohibited at will if the state feels they are a threat to its hegemony.
And they achieved all this, the true Marxist dream, in the space of 6 months with virtually no resistance. No, theyre not going to give it up ever.

a fake vaccine for a fake virus
Never heard of a hoax that killed 227,419 Americans and 1,137,884 people worldwide. What about the rest of the world, including our allies? Are they all in it too?
