Lionsgate Exec Jared Goetz Fired For Allegedly Having Gun on Company Premises
Hollywood Reporter ^ | 10/9/2020 | Bryn Elise Sandberg

The studio's president of North American TV distribution has been let go after an incident involving a coworker. Lionsgate has fired one of its executives for allegedly having a gun on company premises.

Sources say the studio's president of North American TV distribution Jared Goetz has been let go for violating company policy. The gun was discovered when Goetz — who was working in Lionsgate's Santa Monica offices in September — drove a coworker to lunch last month.

In the car, he allegedly opened up about having his house broken into and being attacked in his car at a stoplight recently. The two incidents led him to get a gun for protection, he allegedly told the coworker. He then revealed that he had the gun in the car with them, sources say.

Before heading in the restaurant for lunch with his colleague, Goetz is said to have transferred the gun from his car into a fanny pack he was wearing in the restaurant. There is a dispute about whether the gun was loaded or not. Both Lionsgate and Goetz declined to comment.

A source says Goetz never actually brought the gun into the Lionsgate offices — but that he did have it in his car in the parking lot, which qualifies as company premises and is therefore a violation of Lionsgate's policy. He was subsequently let go for the breach, and today is his last day at the studio.

Bryan Freedman, Goetz’s attorney, responded with the following statement: "Jared had his home burglarized and during the pandemic was attacked in his car at while at a stop light on Reseda Boulevard. He owned a hand gun that was properly licensed. Consistent with past actions, he had plans to go to the shooting range after work and train with Officer Daryl Scoggins of the West Valley police department. As Lionsgate confirmed, this was a one time incident, wherein he never took the gun into the office nor did he remove it from the lock box in the car while he was at work. He never showed it to anyone nor did he threaten or let anyone even see it. It was properly and legally secured and there was no one else who had ever seen it — Jared has alway been a model employee. He has never been involved in anything even close to disciplinary action in more than 25 years of working for companies. He is well liked and an honorable person. He never intended in any way to make anyone uncomfortable nor did he do anything illegal — In fact, there are no allegations that he attempted to scare or threaten anyone. While he has reasons for self protection, he is terribly sorry for this matter and realizes while the gun was properly secured in his vehicle, leaving it in his car in the parking lot was against company policy. He has had tremendous success while at Lionsgate which has led to him being approached with other incredible opportunities. He is focusing on those opportunities and wishes that this was not such a difficult and unsafe time for everyone."

In his role at the independent studio, he was responsible for leading the licensing team and selling content across broadcast, cable, pay TV and SVOD. Before joining Lionsgate in 2017, Goetz spent 22 years at Disney, where he was responsible for the sales of first-run syndicated hits including Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Live With Regis and Kelly and Grey's Anatomy.

I grew up in Massachusetts when it was a very different place.

Anyway- in my history class we studied old laws still on the books. At one time, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts it was ILLEGAL to go to Sunday meeting (day long church) without your rifle.

Every week, every family went to church fully armed.

Assuming they’re accurate Kalifornia almost never issues CCWs.

I’m from California but left a long time ago. Concealed carry permits are issued by county sheriffs. If you get one, it’s good for the whole state. Rural sheriffs do issue permits. Urban sheriffs, very rarely. Four years ago, only 220 permits were current in L.A. county, and of them only 50 were issued to residents. 19 years ago, San Francisco, a city and county, had issued 5.

Why do people continue to run their mouths about what they have in their car, the stash they have at their house, etc....learn to keep your mouth SHUT about these kind of things. You NEVER KNOW what the person you are running your mouth off at will do with that information you just gave them.

I worked at a place where F-ing someone over was almost a guaranteed promotion. I don’t think you could be promoted to management without having F-ed someone.

Good news is that the place was heavily subsidized hobby, and with wuflu, is now a money pit in the extreme. Fun to watch.

Just found a website that has stats that are a few years old.

CCW Permits By State

These stats,if accurate are, when adjusted by population, are very, very revealing.Among the figures that surprise me most are Vermont's...one of the most Maoist states has about the most lenient gun laws.

Kalifornia doesn’t have a gun storage law.

Maybe you were being facetious, but in fact CA does have a gun storage law when transporting a firearm. It must be in a locked case, not including the glove compartment, and separate from the ammunition.

Bragging is also the downfall of many criminals. Smart people enjoy what they have without bragging.

If the person that ratted him out was someone who worked under him, they could of been angling for his job.

You have to be at least rich enough to afford a rural county home which you designate as your primary residence. Then, the sheriff of that county will issue you a permit which is good state-wide. Of course the law makes no sense. You can only get the permit from your local police or sheriff, but the permit is good in any city or county.

They used to be able to issue permits to out-of-town residents. So a guy in L.A. could get a permit from the Culver City chief. But they did away with that. Now there has to be a real residential or employment nexus. Like others said, very rare in the populated counties but in the rural counties they are shall issue. Voting matters.

It was company policy, not law.

Some commie states require you to register firearms with the state. Most states have no such registration.

Voting matters? Are you kidding? The last 15 years I spent in CA, every single thing we voted for failed...It became all but pointless. Reason #14 why we bailed out of that s**t bucket.
