Face masks don't restrict oxygen or contribute to carbon dioxide buildup: study
Fox News ^ | October 2, 2020 | Jeanette Settembre

Breathe easy. A new study suggests that surgical face masks don’t cause a buildup of carbon dioxide or restrict oxygen, despite opposing claims. The study, on the “Effect of Face Masks on Gas Exchange in Healthy Persons and Patients with COPD,” which was published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society on Friday, was conducted after a group of Florida residents challenged Florida’s mask-wearing mandate in June, arguing that wearing the protective face coverings could result in the buildup of too much carbon dioxide.

If they don’t restrict oxygen, you are not wearing it properly. The whole point of a mask is to restrict intake and outtake of air.

I knew that. If I’m in public my mask is on.

The question I’ve posed regarding killer-mask claims has never been answered;
If you’ll drop dead from putting on a mask, why aren’t doctors, nurses and other medical personnel who have worn them a great deal of the time for over a century being hauled away by the thousands, on a daily basis, to the morgue?

A good analogy would be when you add an air filter to a carburetor, one must readjust the carburetor to allow more air, due to the reduced air intake caused by the air filter.

No mention of N95 respirators though. I read somewhere that the prolonged use of this type of mask will reduce oxygen intake.

A co-worker at my daughters workplace fainted and had to have oxygen from wearing the mask. I don’t believe she went back to work.

I call shenanigans!

When I was wearing one at work, I’m an RN, I did my own oxygen saturation and my usual is 97% or 98%. With the mask on they were 86% and I did this on many occasions.

Medicare pays for a patient to go home on oxygen when the sats are under 88%. On room air!

And believe me, Medicare has to have that documented, and also the percentage when walking and lying down. Medicare very much does not want to have to pay for anything if they don’t have to.

For N95 masks, the point is to FILTER air; NOT “restrict” it.

For regular surgical masks and the like, it’s not even doing much of that. What it’s actually doing is filtering respiratory droplets, which are how SARS-CoV-2 primarily spreads. In open air, SARS-CoV-2 (like all viruses) experiences rapid protein deformation, rending it inert and non-infectious. For it to spread, it requires droplets of liquid - such as saliva - which a mask helps trap.

Masks reduce both the volume and range of the respiratory droplets that enable transmission of SARS-CoV-2, which substantially reduces the risk of transmission for those nearby an infected person.

Face masks don't restrict oxygen

Yeah, they do.

I've been wearing N-95 valve masks for a dozen years as part of my job.

This trained me to breathe through my nose.

When I put the face diaper on, I can only go for a short time before I need to expose my nose for more oxygen.

I can wear the valve N-95s all day long while doing moderately heavy work...
