Just when you thought 2020 couldn’t get any worse, several communities in Texas are under a “do not use water” advisory due to fears that a brain-eating amoeba could be in their tap water.

According to the CDC, the amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, is most commonly found in warm freshwater systems such as lakes, rivers and hot springs in warmer parts of the U.S. People often get infected by swimming in these areas, but the CDC lists “contaminated tap water” and “inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water” as “very rare instances.”

The amoeba infects people by entering the body through the nose and can travel to the brain, causing infection - a rare, but devastating condition known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).

Like you in Everett, here in North King County we have good water, too.

I’m not actually sure whether the Seattle woman who died was south of Seattle with a different reservoir.

I have read, though, that even though the Seattle water is very good that there is still a small amount of bugs, slugs, twig debris which may cause cancer in about one percent of the population.

I actually do get tap water in my nose when I shower. I think the issue with the netti pot was that it was deep penetration into the sinuses.

Much ado about nothing. People here are getting to be chicken littles. Your odds of contracting a brain-eating amoeba are about 1 in 70 million.

In Texas there is a town called New Braunfels (nice little town), where there is a large
German-speaking population.

One day, a local rancher driving down a country road noticed a man using his hand to drink water from the rancher’s stock pond.

The rancher rolled down the window and shouted: “Sehr angenehm! Trink das
Wasser nicht. Die kuehe haben darein geschissen.”

Which loosely means: “Glad to meet you! Don’t drink the water.
The cows have shit in it.”

The man shouted back: “I’m from New York and just down here campaigning for
Obama’s health care plan. I can’t understand you. Please speak in English.”

The rancher replied: “Use both hands.”

we get our water from a kiosk as the tap water has issues.——

I hate to pop Yer bubble but that Machine is hooked up to the City Water Supply. It MAY have a Membrane filter or Reverse Osmosis BUT IT'S STILL THE SAME WATER AS IS COMING OUT OF Your faucet(s) AT Your house. Unless You have a Private Well.

And don't count on that Kiosk Machine being Serviced as often as it should be.

Add up how much $$$$ Y'All are stuffing in that machine in a year and I'll bet You could have purchased a Whole House RO or Membrane Filter System.

The City Water Department is required by Law (EPA) to make available to the Public a CCR (Consumer Confidence Report) also called a Water Quality Report for every year.

2012 Report and Phoenix Water Services Department

Yea, I’ll just stay out of swimming ‘holes’ all together. Since my bone marrow transplant, it’s not advised.

I hate to pop Yer bubble but that Machine is hooked up to the City Water Supply.

I know that. It couldn't possibly hold that much water inside. What I also know is that the water is treated with RO, ultraviolet light, two filters, and a couple of other purifying treatments.

I know the device gets serviced frequently (at least once a week) because there a label on the machine, and I have seen the service man come by chance when I was getting water.

The analysis of the water shows these things don't even have flouride left in the end. It certainly tastes better than the city tap water by the time it all done as well.

The price? 20 cents a gallon. We go through about 20 gallons a week (drinking water, iced tea, coffee tea, ice cubes). That's $4 per week times 52 weeks.or $208 per year.

A cheap RO system will run between $250-$400, and you will still have to change 2-3 filters regularly depending on how bad the water at your tap is. An expensive one is hundreds more for the kitchen sink. I have no idea how much a whole house RO is, or what it does for the water bill, but I am sure it is at least a couple of thousand dollars, or ten years of water.

In our case, we live in a rental house anyway, so a whole house RO is not in the cards at this time. I would consider it if we buy our own home, but probably not until we arew settled.

The kiosks don't cost any more, it is mainly the hassle of 100 trips a year that I would be saving.

Fine for those smart enough to read and actually follow directions. For the others, the amoebas aren’t picky about the quality of their brain food.

I live in the area and I can tell you there is a high level of herd immunity.

Fortunately I’m on a private well.

I can’t believe it’s been 28 years since Sam Kinison died. How is that possible? Where did the time go?
