Britains US trade deal is in jeopardy if the UK endangers Northern Ireland peace over Brexit, US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has said.
We cant allow the [1998] Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland to become a casualty of Brexit, Biden said on Wednesday (16 September).
Any trade deal between the US and UK must be contingent upon respect for the agreement and preventing the return of a hard border. Period, he added.
Biden spoke out during a visit by British foreign secretary Dominic Raab to Washington.
The Democrats concern comes after the UK threatened to renege on its EU withdrawal agreement, risking the reimposition of a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland in violation of the Good Friday accord.
But for his part, the British top diplomat blamed the EU for the situation when he met US secretary of state Mike Pompeo the same day.
The threat to the Good Friday Agreement
has come from the EUs politicization of the issue, Raab said.

Wait...isn’t he a private citizen attempting to influence foreign policy? Hatch act, anyone?
So candidate Biden is now attempting to interfere with negotiations between the U.K. and the E.U.? What business is it of his or the U.S.?
SloJoe is able to remember things as they were decades ago, but is unable to understand what is happening now.
Hmmmmm.....
Hes looking for a payday.
I think Biden threatening the UK is good. Maybe it will motivate them to keep their spooks out of the business of trying to prevent Trump getting elected this time around.
Another quid pro quo?
Those spies you refer to are the Democrats’ allies.
Funny thing is Bush is probably supporting this

What a lot of people seem to forget, mostly because the Unionists don’t have as a good a PR machine as the Irish nationalist/republicans, is that the GFA also makes promises and guarantees to protect Unionist interests and wishes as well.
The EU threatening to put an East West internal UK border is a violation of the guarantees given to the Unionists that the constitutional position of Northern Ireland will not be altered except with the consent of the people of Northern Ireland, who as things stand constitute the majority in Northern Ireland.
Britain has stated time and time again that it has no intention of erecting a hard border in Ireland, the only ones threatening to do so are the EU, who are trying to force the UK to put one up in the Irish sea in order to avoid one on the island of Ireland.
Perhaps all the ignorant plastic paddies like Biden and his ilk in Congress, Irish politicians playing the green card, the EU and treasonous reomoaners in the UK who are seeking to weaponise the Irish border for political gain either to thwart Brexit or advance the cause of a united Ireland should realise that the only parties threatening the Belfast Agreement are the EU and the Republic of Ireland who are using it to pursue their own agenda when all Britain wants is a free trade deal that would render the issue of any kind of border, whether north-south or east-west moot.
If American politicians were really so concerned with upholding the GFA in a fair and impartial way, rather than selectively in favour of the Nationalist/Republican perspective or to indulge in their latent Anglophobia, they would be pressuring the EU not to keep trying to force a border to be put up in order to punish Britain for Brexit and therefore tear up the GFA.
The EU’s playing reverse psychology, though; they don’t really want a hard border but a very much open one so they can have a back door into the island of Britain. They don’t care about the Good Friday Agreement, because only agreements made (and/or broken) by the EU are valid in their eyes.
