Trump to Make Supreme Court Nomination Friday or Saturday. President has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

President Trump said he would nominate a Supreme Court pick on Friday or Saturday and has five women under consideration to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as Senate Republicans lined up behind him and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.), rejecting Democrats’ calls to let the winner of the presidential election make the pick.

Mr. Trump maintained that the replacement of Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87, should happen swiftly. “We won the election and elections have consequences,” he said Monday morning on Fox News. “We have plenty of time.”

The president’s list has been narrowed to two leading candidates, according to people familiar with the matter: federal appellate judges Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit, in Chicago, and Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit, in Atlanta.

The president said he has three other people to choose from, though declined to name them. He said he was looking for someone who is young and could serve on the court for a long time. “We’re looking for a good person.”

Judge Barrett, 48 years old, was confirmed to the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in October 2017 in a 55-43 vote. She is popular among social conservatives and was a finalist for the post in 2018 when Mr. Trump chose Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Lagoa, 52, previously served as the first Hispanic woman on Florida’s high court.

More than 20 Senate Republicans said over the weekend that they back moving immediately to fill the vacancy, and many are expected to follow suit as the week gets under way. Two Republican senators—Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—broke ranks this weekend, saying they oppose action on a nomination before the presidential election.

Making the nomination before the funeral and just a few days after the death would be an unforced error.

Of course, if the funeral was dragged out, that's one thing. I'm happy with the Fri/Sat timetable. That's one week since RGB's death. No tactical reason for it to be sooner than that.

He needs to wait until at least her memorial service is over.

Why?

Exactly...once the nomination is out...it’s on the table. If we continue to hold the Senate and I’m certain we will, The Dems gain nothing.

I thought he said this weekend that it would be today or tomorrow.

Now he says Friday or Saturday?

They all work for me. And it keeps the derps guessing.

She’s Jewish. The burial is private and it should happen today.

As much as I dislike the fact that Trump is narrowing his options to only women, all things considered it’s a shrewd move. They can’t pull the “he raped me 37 years ago” schtick with a female candiate. And I hate to say it, but many contemporary American women voters are so irrational to the point where they’ll only stick up for someone if it’ll help women as a group (to the exclusion of other issues/groups). Trump wants to get as many women as possible on his side by picking a woman, especially since the suburban white woman was a deciding factor in the dems taking the house in 2018 IIRC.

would sink the Utah senator with binders of woman if he doesn’t support a female conservative for the high court.

That's funny. Half of Mitt's voters in Utah want women barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen. Mitt has the golden ticket, and that is support of the LDS church. If he were up for election this cycle, the impeachment vote and blocking a SCOTUS nominee would hurt him. In 2024, it will be long forgotten.

If Mitt is a candidate for POTUS in 2024, the media will fawn over him as a sensible, principled statesman. Until he wins the nomination, when they will savage him. Mitt will again wonder how they could betray him. Like McCain, he serves as their useful idiot.

Wow, had not seen this video...

When I think more about Barrett...

She does have the two adopted kids from Haiti...so, she might end up soft on illegal immigration...?

She’s also teaches Law at Notre Dame...in recent years ND has been leaning too far Left...could be following the chucklehead Socialist in the Vatican...

I’m talking myself out of Coney Barrett now...

In the end, they are all a crap shoot to some extent...

I feel like it is going to have to be someone who has already been through senate confirmation in the last 3 years.

Otherwise, there will be immense pressure to “make sure to fully vet the nominee”, and a lot of chances for all sorts of false accusations to be put forward that would need to be investigated.

That’s why I think it will probably by Barrett, even if Trump would like Laguo. If this had happened in March, it would be different. The chances of the democrats finding anything new against Barrett are virtually nil, and anything they make up, people will have to explain why it didn’t come out in the brutal fight 2 years ago.

Hi.

“Justice Ginsburg, who died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at the age of 87,”

When will the Justice be buried? According to Mosaic law, she should have been in the clay already.

Did I miss something?

Why? Even the left is ravaging her barely cold cadaver? To hell with these monsters.

Wait for them to impeach him? Wait for another envelope of ricin? Wait for crazy Nancy’s quiver of arrows? What are we waiting for exactly? This is war. Not even a little hyperbole here. Major, prominent leftists, even CNN reporters have stated as much.

Yes, bury her. But this process is what we voted for. Not to make peace with these monsters but to tear down the influence of socialism in our country for decades.

THIS is the prize!

Barrett with the weird article and position on having to recuse herself from issues where her decision might conflict with teachings from Rome. How well would immigration decisions work out with that?

Lagao was first nominated by Jeb and has apparently been pushed by Marco.

Neither with much in the way of decisions that would tell us enough IMO.
