The hit comedy movie 'Airplane!' is 40 years old. It shows its age, but it's still relevant (back in theaters Aug 30)

It would be easy to put “Airplane!” on a no-fly list of offensive films. That would be a mistake because it demonstrates how to push boundaries in the right way.

When it first crash-landed in cinemas 40 years ago, the irreverent “Airplane!” wowed critics and audiences with its fast-and-loose brand of humor. It remains one of the most consistently uproarious laughfests ever filmed, and became an instant comedy classic when it hit screens in 1980. The 40th anniversary Blu-ray reissue arrives Tuesday.

In writing and directing “Airplane!,” the creative triumvirate of Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker (later known as ZAZ) combined vaudevillian humor, oddball non sequiturs, dirty jokes and visual gags into a unique flurry of funny. One can rewatch the film and uncover new visual and verbal jokes because they packed in so many punchlines.

This was a topsy-turvy world where the roughest bar brawlers are feisty Girl Scouts, a military commander fights his way through religious recruiters at LAX, and a Boeing 747 sign features “no smoking” and “no screwing” light displays. And then there was the witty word play: "Surely you can't be serious?" “I am serious — and don’t call me Shirley.” And yes, coming at the beginning of the ’80s, it delved into gratuitous nudity and cursing, though it stopped short of totally overplaying its hand...

On the fly I came up with an Airplaneish one like that to the question;

Coworker: “What’s the deal?”

Me: “It’s where you sit down and they put cards in front of you but that’s not important right now.”

I didn’t like the shot at Ronald Reagan

I think there were a few - the one woman who was sick, and said, "I haven't been this sick since we saw that Ronald Reagan movie?" ... and I seem to recall one other ...

Very funny but I didn’t like the shot at Ronald Reagan. But very funny movie

Knowing what I know about Reagan, he probably laughed at it. Never knew a man more comfortable in his own skin.

In the original, the scene where Barbara Billingsly talks to the 2 mice Negro gentlemen and they tell her they do not want help, her response was “nigga don’ wan’ no he’p, nigga don’ get no he’p.”

NOT “sucka!” That was edited in about 25 years ago — the original, which might be on VHS or maybe Betamax, is lost to history.

Whenever I’m putting lipstick on in the car while hubby is driving, we make an Airplane reference. But at least “I HAVE a husband.” Lol.

Kind of like a hat tip to Abbott and Costello.

Probably.

He may be gone from us but I am still very protective of Him.

He was a great man.

I don’t skip movies over a few political jokes I don’t like.

But today’s movies...wow!! :)

the jokes are about killing us!

Airplane and Blazing Saddles are my favorite funny movies-laughter is good, and making fun of absolutely everyone-no PC at all-is real equality....

I watched Airplane a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday evening-I’ve seen many, many times and I always laugh just as hard...

I went to that movie as a teenager with a group of friends that summer, not knowing what to expect. Sounded like another one of those disaster movies that were so popular in the 1970s like "Airport '75" or "Towering Inferno."

From start to finish, the entire cinema was nothing but laughter. People were rolling in the aisles. Even the closing credits had a bunch of gags. I went back to see it at least twice after that.

The ZAZ crew put out a few more comedies like "Top Secret" but were never able to top "Airplane".
