My company uses a lot of independent contractors. I have employees but, given the nature of the work my firm does (short term projects), it makes more sense for me to hire specialists to perform certain tasks rather than bring on a new employee. I have been using essentially the same group of independent contractors for the past 10 years. Some of them work as little as 10 hours a month, others as much as 30 hours a week depending on the jobs we have.
Clearly, I'm not the only small business doing this. Sites like UpWork, Fiverr, Guru and Freelancer.com have created work for literally millions of freelancers, independent contractors and side-hustlers over the past few years. Ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft have built their businesses around independent contractors. So have publishing, media, trucking, construction, landscaping, technology and countless other smaller firms similar to mine.
For the employer, hiring an independent contractor (otherwise known as a "1099 contractor," which refers to the IRS form that employers must submit to report their payments every year) has many upsides. You're not required to pay employer taxes, health insurance or other employee benefits. But its not just the employers who benefit. Most of the 1099ers I've met and all of the ones I work with prefer the relationship. It offers them more control, allows them to be entrepreneurial and gives them the ability to charge what they want and pick and choose the work they do and the people they work for.
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is a supporter of a new law in California Assembly Bill 5, or AB5 that fundamentally changes the way companies treat their freelancers.

This law ‘helps’ freelancers in California by incentivizing employers to fire them immediately, which they have done. Ooops. But the dems never ever ever admit a mistake, they double down. So of course they will take it national if they can.
Wouldn’t matter since his presidency would be the death of America.
I think it would mean the death of the US as we know it - period. That said, I’m not sure it will survive, no matter who is elected. I’ve said for years that I think 2020 will be the last presidential election in the US, assuming we even have that one.
Well, the virus just put that prediction on steroids. That is, the REACTION to the virus.
2021 will make 2020 look like the good ol’ days. I don’t even want to speculate on 2022. I hope all y’all got enough beans and ammo.
Replace “freelancing” with “everything, even cockroaches and amoeba” and it’s more accurate
Yes, but Biden will not (legitimately) win the Presidency. The Demonrats already know this; that’s why they’re pumping out as much fake-poll fake news as they can now, to try to reduce Trump’s “popular-vote” margin. The latter does NOT elect Presidents, though, so it’s just media spin.
Uber and Lyft are shutting down in California because of this.
My thoughts exactly.
I guess that would effectively be the same as death of America.
I hope all yall got enough beans and ammo.
Ammo yes, beans maybe. I have 3 cats....hear they are tasty if it comes down to it. LOL. Kidding of course.
As goes California, so goes the rest of the country, eventually.............
> Wouldnt matter since his presidency would be the death of America. <
You beat me to it. A Biden presidency plus a Democrat Congress (heaven forbid) would mean the end of the Republic.
Because these arent your grandfathers Democrats. They are much more like Lenin then like Truman.
I know of some performers who are liberal. They detest AB5. Who is going to hire a musician/entertainer for a one time gig? Entertainers are livid. Lets see if they can connect the dots.
Don’t you mean President Kimmy? Biden will be put in a nursing home or worse within 2 weeks.
I work in employee benefits. The growing trend over the last 15 years is to make employees subcontractors 1099 employees. No benefits.
Large companies do this by hiring from temporary agencies. Don’t like the employee? Tell the temp agency not to bring him or her back.
This started with blue collar but now rapidly spreading to white collar.
The country is fuarked and heading down the tubes.
And don't think for a moment that they wouldn't do away with the filibuster.
Yes.
Because his brain is GONE.
And thus he would NOT resist the pressure from AOC types to replicate what was done in California.
Any decent instinct Joe might have ever had sleeps with the fishes.
Well, the choice is yours. Do you want three cats or 20 squirrels? Where I live, they are mutually exclusive. :)
I have zero problem with short term people hired on as subcontractors but companies doing this to full time will lead to more people voting democrat.
the death of democracy
