Some California tenants have faced increasingly aggressive eviction efforts over the last month, despite emergency protections meant to preserve people’s housing during the coronavirus pandemic. And although advocates have urged state officials to strengthen the rules, key renters’ protections are set to expire without new state plans in place.
The result, experts say, could be catastrophic.
Amid rising coronavirus infections and a worsening economic crisis, hundreds of thousands of renters are now at risk of becoming homeless in California, potentially exacerbating the state’s dire housing crisis. In addition, advocates fear the lack of protections will embolden some landlords to resort to hostile methods to get their renters out, at a time when many Californians have nowhere to go.
State lawmakers are looking at one proposed California law, AB 1436, that would prohibit evictions until April 2021, or 90 days after the emergency ends, whichever happens first. The law would also allow tenants to repay debts through the state via their tax returns in subsequent years. It could also potentially allow the lowest-income tenants to apply for rent forgiveness.

WTF?
What happens to that couple living together who lost their jobs and have no hope of finding one?
The uncertainty in their lives will definitely lead to many planned weddings being cancelled.
What about those families whose small business like hair salons, Dry Cleaners and neighborhood restaurants currently shuttered become permanently so?
The grandmother who they cared for through these small businesses, what happens to her? Will she want to live knowing the incredible pressure her children are under to care for her?
What of the worker who was previously making $150-$250k a year and the pile of debt they incurred based on that income?
An extra $600 in unemployment per week for a few months?
Pfffttt!!!
April next year, 2020 or 90 days there after....
an entire year of lost wages for millions of workers or income for so many businesses who are no longer able to sell their goods and no longer require employees
Bankruptcy courts are never catch up to this....
All manipulated by their governor
This nonsense will continue until a majority of Americans demand the government be run by democrats.
They can’t build anything there. You have to buy and old building or house and remodel it.
And will the State of California also forego foreclosures of rental properties because of unpaid taxes?
Starting to see a pattern here
most of the nom de juere start with the letter “P”
Go to Frisco - get free apartment
It’ll last as long as Democrat gov/mayors in their state will let it last.
Why in the hell would the tenants be struggling they are making more money than when working!!
That and the cascade effect in the financial system when property owners with renters not paying walk away from their mortgages.
Everyone on Main Street who is delinquent is ultimately delinquent to a bank and their profit motive. It wasn’t that long ago that Main Street bailed out Wall Street and the Banks so it seems only right to me for the Banks to suspend their customers payments until the crisis is over.
Yep
Of course the government will waive tax payments and financial institutions will waive loan payments on the rental properties. Most rental homes are owned by small time private investors. What no help for them California?
We are one of those depending upon the $600/wk...which is a pittance regarding our normal earnings...but since our last and final fair of 2020 has cancelled, it is all we have to look forward to...now fairs in 2021 are starting to cancel (Indio)...
The Outdoor Entertainment Industry has been wiped...the destruction is near complete...Get a job? Who will hire a broken up 63 year old man? For what wages? What skills. I have worked for myself most of my life-—I can’t work for anyone else.
All I can say is, at least we don’t have renters and at least our house and property is paid.
But people renting....just what are they supposed to do? The Landlord? What are they supposed to do? None of this is their fault...if it weren’t for the Plague...
I know a guy, a friend who is a clown. Had one fair...he posted about it on FB and all the other entertainers are cheering him on...why? Cause he had a job. They don’t begrudge him that job-—they are happy that someone they know is getting work, even if it is a small fair.
We are partaking in a virtual fair. What is that? No one really knows. It hasn’t been done before. Comes up next month. It is at a fair that we have been doing for some ten years...Gotta do something to earn some jack...
You know...there is that old testament tradition of Jubilee Year....just have the Government declare 2020 a Jubilee Year. I don’t know how all the details would work but it makes as much sense as anything else and at least it is rooted in some sort of tradition.
Rents in sf average like 3000 a month. Because people get well paid here. They are no longer being well paid.
Partly its not our fault because the government is not allowing us to work.
Partly it is our fault because we voted these cretins in.
Hang in there. This too shall pass. I know the feel of who will hire me? At 63 you can probably get social security...but you are willing and able to work. Perhaps in a freer state?
Nobody cares about the struggling landlord about to lose his property.
Certain privileged investors will be buying up property for mere pennies on the dollar. Trust the plan, it’s working like a charm.
