The dominant message so far in the coronavirus pandemic is that older people are the most at risk. But doctors on the front lines of Floridas outbreak are also finding obesity is making it harder for people to fight off the virus, regardless of age

Dr. Craig Mallaks work in the morgue tracking Broward Countys COVID-19 deaths startled him so much he shed pounds that he didnt even need to lose.
Obesity is a factor in a lot of cases, Mallak, Browards chief medical examiner,

That could have grave implications for the United States, which has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, said Dr. Cate Varney, an obesity specialist at the University of Virginia Health System.
...
people who have a body-mass index greater than 30 are at higher risk, said Dr. Sunil Kumar, medical director of intensive care at Broward Health Medical Center. Body-mass index varies by height and weight. A person who is off the normal weight by about 40 pounds could be considered obese, a category that includes about 30% of Floridians.
...
younger patients with COVID-19 who are admitted to the hospital are more likely to have obesity as an underlying factor. Thats been backed up by Kumars own observation in the ICU.
...
One theory is that people with obesity have more Ace2 receptors on their cells. The virus uses these receptors to infect cells and then make copies of itself.
...
People with obesity are also susceptible to low-grade chronic inflammation, which has been associated with worse outcomes.
Another factor could be that being overweight compresses the lungs, leading to smaller lung capacity. Obesity is linked with other chronic illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, that heighten the risk.

Sky blue is racist if you are forced to live in a city.
I posted this on a previous thread about Mexican Beer Virus:
Heres an interesting article about age, weight and Wuflu:
We found patients younger than 50 years of age hospitalized with COVID-19 without diabetes or hypertension had mean BMI greater than those older than 50 years of age, with BMI 43.1 (95%CI 34.5 - 51.7) kg/m2 vs 30.1 (95%CI 27.7 - 32.5) kg/m2 (p=0.02).
A BMI of 43 is someone whos 55 and 260 lbs.
Oh well. Even though I’ve lost 10 pounds in the last month or so, I’m probably still screwed.
You have my word that neither your nor I are going to die from this virus.
Something else...but not this thing. :)
Neighbor has a son who works in Phila Pa Hospital as an RN. The only Twenty something that died of COVID was between 400 and 500 pounds.
Get cancer. It really knocks your weight down.
ICU nurse working the COVID wards during the height of NYC’s crisis told me almost every last person in all the four wards she worked (ventilator patients all) was morbidly obese.
Yes, it’s not just being technically “obese”, it’s the “morbidly obese” line which is the truly dangerous risk factor.
I figured that out over 3 weeks ago & I went to a one room school-—in the late 40’s & early 50’s.
Does this make me more expert than all the ‘Experts”???
Little known is Newton’s 4th law:
A body that remains at rest tends to get fat.
Being retired and at rest, I can offer proof.
Should rename this thing the Single Payer Healthcare Virus.
Just think; if no vaccines end up being effective and this thing hangs around for a few years, we’ll have a planet of young and/or healthy people.
On Thanksgiving I tipped the scales at 159 pounds, the heaviest ever for me. I started riding bicycles and was riding a trainer and using Zwift all winter. I have lost 26 pounds. I really didn’t need to lose any of it but according to most BMI charts at 155 pounds I’m overweight. This is silly even at 159 I’m skinny. At 133 I’m actually thinking I need to put a few back on.
Hmm, wonder if blue (and some red) state lockdowns, including closing responsibly run gyms, parks, and beaches could make people watch soap operas all day and make people fatter....
Fantastic Movie. Food shortages because they are salting the earth.
Sadly, they probably couldn’t make Airplane today (like a lot of other movies).
Blazing Saddles being first.
