History is pounding at agricultures door. One of the greatest farming enigmas to afflict growers in the last 100 years has been solved, yet the answer sits idle. At its core, the cotton riddle is simple: How to remove a naturally occurring pest deterrent from seeds, yet preserve the toxin within plants? The long-sought solution means cotton can make a massive leap from fabric to consumptionand provide 10.8 trillion grams of precious protein for the animal feed industry and human intake. Bottom line: After 7,000 years of cultivation, cotton is at the cusp of helping feed the planet.
Cotton has slipped the ball-and-chain of gossypol, a bitter-tasting toxin that ensures the vast majority of cottonseed is only suitable for cattle consumption. Gossypol has long been in the crosshairs of a cotton industry anxious for new markets, but removal exclusively from seed has proved impossible or impracticaluntil now. A breakthrough advance, painstakingly achieved by a stellar Texas A&M University research team, and supported by the confidence of Cotton Incorporated, has led to cottonseed devoid of gossypol, and tagged with the imprimatur of FDA and USDA.

the world’s hungry are usually in that condition because their government is withholding food for some political or religious reason
“Cotton.... It’s for dinner.”
Cottonseed refried beans can’t wait. Actually this is a big deal, cotton seed for human consumption would be a game changer, more billions of us could be fed, something like the rice revolution some decades ago.
Actually, it has been done before during the siege of Leningrad (St. Petersburg), the population ate some really cruddy bread made in part from cottonseed meal. It also included dirt from a burnt sugar storage house floor where the burnt syrup had crept into the dirt.
Of course many people also starved to death.
You’re out of your cotton-pickin’ mind!
Maybe we could bet BLM to pick it for us
We kept calves when I was a kid, and I always thought the cottonseed meal smelled good. Not as good as the molasses infused sweet feed smelled, but good.
whats its cost per calorie?
still gonna be hard to beat corn I bet. There is not a shortage food in the world.

What is its glycemic Index?
Cotton Candy . . . . It’s for dessert.
That is what I had thought about the seed hulls.
I suppose we’ll just need to wait and see what happens.
This is a good endeavor. There is often more to be learnt from what we think we understand and take for granted.
Just imagine all the uses we already get from the corn plant.
I support this sort of research over Global Warming topics.
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
As noted in the article, solving the science is only one hurdle. As is the case with so many forward leaps like this.
Just make dam sure we pick it ourselves.

Say what? Cotton seed meal is already used in animal feed as a supplement for winter feed. Our standard feed mix was two cans of cottonseed meal and one can of rock salt, to keep them from eating too much.
I guess you don’t like chocolate then ?
My first thought was OMG...the South really is going to rise again! I love the fields when the cotton is ripe for picking...closest thing we get to seeing snow...lol
Chocolate covered cotton, anyone?
What will this do to the social fabric?
King Gossypol ping.
I suspect it means the price of cotton clothing is going up when this stuff comes on the market. I am pretty miserable with acetate or the various synthetics in the summer. Of course everything is destined to go up pretty hard with all the fairy dust money the Fed and Washington has dumped into the system this year.
